2.5 yr old undoing car seat belt - help!

My DS is 2.5 yrs old and is very dexterous for his age. He can open stair gates, do up zips and buttons, do up and undo buckles, open screw top lids...

Yesterday, he decided that he would undo his car seat belt! He has an ASD (waiting for diagnosis) and has a speech delay (has about 50 words). So it's difficult to explain to him that he mustn't undo his belt whilst in the car.

Any advice? I'm really worried.

Is he in a booster seat? If so you can get a harness which has a safety buckle for kids who can undo seat belts. They are called crelling harnesses. If you Google it you'll find the company website. The only thing is they are quite expensive - I think i paid around £100 for a harness for my DD's wheelchair. The company will provide a quote and might let you try one to make sure he can't get out of it

I have this problem I put dd in the front seat as she can undo her harness she behaves better there and if she does undo her car seat I can see and stop her or pull over.

Hi, my DD has this car seat

Because of the bar, she is unable to get to the buckle button, so can't escape

bookcase - DS is in a Group 1/2/3 seat, as I was hoping that it would last him till he's 12!
proudmum74 - Thanks for the link. I've just had a look - do you think it's possible for a toddler to get their arm round to undo the main seat belt that holds the seat in? Also, how easy/hard is it for a toddler to push the impact shield out?
poltergoose - Sounds like a great idea, but I've just had a look on Halfords' website and can't find what you've described. Did you use these pads and were they effective?

lottytheladybird my DD is 2.11 and can't access the main seat belt button when sat in her chair, but they have them in John Lewis if you wanted to give them a try before you bought. It's not possible for the child to push the bar out, providing it has been closed properly.

Alternatively, do you live anywhere near Milton Keynes? As we bought ours from incarsafety they really seemed to know what they were talking about when it came to SN children's requirements, and may be able to recommend something.

You can buy a lock from buckle safe uk.

Houdini I think it's called, a clip that goes on the 5 point harness. Absolute £12 off eBay, new.
