Got a kind of diagnosis?

The CAHMS doctor told me dd is quite a severe case of autism that hes talking to me about her being diagnosed because as soon as he gets the ed pychs report he will diagnose. He gave me a book about autism and coping with diagnosis and said she will have a formal diagnosis within a month.

Wow...that sounds like a real diagnosis to me, even if it's not on paper.

We have had something similar,We had a lady from camhs round a few times and it was her that spotted aspergers in our ds,
She rang our pead and got some forms,she observed him,and 3 weeks later we got our diagnosis,
It was a relive to us to be honest,as we knew there was something!
We have since left a message on our peads answer phone saying we would like to be sent on a course of some sort to understand it all,
How do yo feel on the diagnosis?

Thanks both I feel a little numb to be honest I feel like I should feel happy and sad and many other emotions but I just feel numb. I guess the feelings will come later. Im taking dd out for lunch to pizza hut her faveourite to try and cheer us up/celebrate and leaving the house work.

Now the feelings are here I feel sad angry but relieved and happy at the same time.

I know I would have been more angry and sad if he had dissmissed my fears though. But I just feel angry and sad that I wasnt wrong and that my beautiful dd has to suffer with this.

Well, I don't blame you for feeling sad and angry. I felt a strange mix of elation and depression when I got DD1's first DLA decision through - I had convinced myself we would be turned down completely, so when she got High Rate Care, I thought 'wow....it must be obvious'.

I don't know about 'suffer' though - that's all perspective, isn't it?

I guess I cant help feeling like its going to make her life hard.

The doctor was lovely apologised for people pushing play group he said they have to try it just in case but with dd severity its obviously not the problem so hes sorry for how hard the diagnostic journey is. He was lovely.

Some things will be hard. Other things may be a whole lot easier than someone without ASD.

My DD1, for example, has none of the social inhibitions that I have. She just assumes that everyone thinks she's amazing. She is effortless with strangers, because she thinks she is their best friend from the first moment.

Now, from my perspective, that adds a problematic feature - safety. For her, there is no problem.

Glad the doc was thoughtful crawling.

I nearly jumped for joy when my Dd3 was finally diagnosed after 3.5 yrs of assessments. Later in the day though , I felt like I had been in a boxing ring and felt like that for a couple of weeks.

3:5 years sounds awful IneedMorePatience I was lucky 7months since first referral for it and that was hard enough.

Hi we got diagnosis for my son 3 weeks ago. It's strange. I was relieved to start, then kind of forgot about it during half term. This week the reality has hit a bit as I am looking at schools etc and waiting for statement. It seems to go on and on. Our assessment process was only 8 months, I think that was pretty good but I was certain before the initial appointment so I was getting desperate for the diagnosis so we could crack on with things and also for my peace of mind. lol at Lougle, yes my ds is absolutely gorgeous and charming when it's going his way. How old is your dd? My son is 5 and with hindsight could have been diagnosed much earlier, which I regret now, but hey ho just going to move forward with things.

Limboli Thank you my dd is 3:6 they tried to refer her at 2:6 but I reacted badly as felt she would catch up but then after a few months I realised that she wasnt going to and allowed the assessments.

I feel very bad about that. What im most worried about is the school like you im trying for a statement and im finding it stressful to. Glad your ds got his diagnosis.

Thanks Crawling. You have time now to try and get that sorted before your dd even starts school. I knew nothing about statements etc when my DS was that age, sometimes I think my own denial allowed everyone to allow more time to roll by before spending out but maybe I am just being cynical! Hindsight is a wonderful thing, hopefully you won't need it :-)

Crawling, I think getting the dx is still a shock, even if you have been expecting it. Hope you are ok.
