I am a very visual person, and finally got around to putting up photos on my profile. Thought you might want to know what the crazy Canadian and her family look like.

you all look so smart Smile

really lovely pictures of you all. I currently only have pictures of ds (and those are out of date now - he's a hulking 7 months old now Shock

BeeMom · 21/02/2013 18:04

It is remarkable how the children keep getting older but we don't, isn't it silverfrog?

Oh Bee your dcs have such lovely smiles - and your ds looks like such a proud big brother. Smile

Iirc, I think there are only photos of cakes on my profile. Blush

silverfrog · 21/02/2013 18:09

ha! I wish I didn't look any older

clearly I am only 23 still (despite having dd1 when I was 26! Grin).

I think I've put a couple of the girls on now too.

moosemama · 21/02/2013 18:10

Oops - no. Just checked and there's a horrible picture of my CRPS foot on there as well.

I really must get around to deleting that one. Blush

silverfrog · 21/02/2013 18:13

your cakes are brilliant, moose! I have to do a ladybird for dd2's party on sunday, and I don't think mine will look anything like yours Grin

hazeyjane · 21/02/2013 18:23

It is lovely to see photos of everyone, and cakes, always lovely to see photos of cakes! I've made my profile public too.

I want more photos, of everyone and their dcs!

BeeMom · 21/02/2013 18:28

OK moose - now I feel compelled to post a couple of my cake pictures. I am very much an amateur, but figured I would give it a try. As for the foot - OW!!!

Your cakes are amazing!!!

Lovely photos, Bee. My ds would be so jealous of the Minecraft cake Grin

hazeyjane · 21/02/2013 18:36

ah, thankyou Beemom, glad I shoved, your family look lovely.

I have added dd1's birthday cake from last year to get in on the cake action!

silverfrog · 21/02/2013 18:42

wow, all your cakes are amazing! will try to find one of dd2's cake last week - have some on my phone, but not sure if I've uploaded any...

BeeMom · 21/02/2013 18:52

Wow Bee, my ds would seriously love a Minecraft cake like that one!

Hazey , I have the same cord bakerboy hat as you and my dh and yours are spookily similar in appearance, I had to do a double-take there for a second. Dd had a Hello Kitty cake this year, but I haven't got around to uploading a picture of it yet.

Silverfrog, the ladybird cake was one of the easiest ones to do. I used a spherical cake tin to bake it, then it was easy to measure the black and red sugarpaste against the tin as well. Antennae are just black drinking straws with a blob of sugarpaste on the end!

I love your Hello Kitty cake. I looked at the moulded tins, but was Confused as to how to decorate them, so went for just a head instead.

I have to keep all my cakes very simple these days, as I have intentional tremor which, typically, is worst in my right (icing) hand.

I will see if I can get a picture of my Hello Kitty off dh's phone and upload it.

moosemama · 21/02/2013 20:28

Bee, I just showed ds1 your Minecraft cake and his reaction was "WOW!" Grin

I said, "Is that good then?" and he said "It's not good it's great. In fact, it would be a shame to eat it."

He's never said that about one of my cakes! Envy

Think I may have to copy your design come his birthday in April!

Have uploaded Hello Kitty now. Smile

silverfrog · 21/02/2013 20:46

I leave decorating to dh and dd2 Grin

but none of us have really got the hang of working with sugarpaste - it always goes a bit too soft and squidgy...and by the next day is virtually running off the cake - nice!

the hello kitty mould was a silicone job, and was an absolute bastard to use. no clue as to quantity (equivalent to 3 1lb loaf tins, I discovered when measuring for size), and had to make the damn thing gf/cf too. the body is half the depth of the head, and so cooking time is a nightmare, and when full of batter the blardy thing tips over on the tray Confused - we had to keep checking and propping up the front, or the back, or the side of the baking tray. was a nightmare.

I have a half-hemishpere tin, and will be baking on Saturday. once again, I will probably leave the decorating up to dh and dd2... all has to be gf/cf and nut free (not even traces) this time around, so it may well end up being (non) butter icing.

silverfrog · 21/02/2013 20:47

erm, that would be a half-shpere, or a hemishperical tin, wouldn't it? Blush

NoHaudinMaWheest · 21/02/2013 20:49

Bee my Ds wants a Minecraft cake for his next birthday. Even though it isn't until September I don't think I'm going to be as ambitious as you.

moosemama · 21/02/2013 20:55

Silver, all my cakes are gf and when my dsis is coming to the party, gluten and dairy free. It's a right pita to get them right, as they never seem to 'look' cooked, even when they are and I always end up baking them too dry.

I am now panicking about how to do a Minecraft cake for ds1. Ds2's birthday is eight days later and I'm thinking he's going to want Lego Batman this year. Mind you, it can't be as bad as the year they both chose full on 3d Pokemon cakes - a Pichu and Ditto, iirc. I was really ill and kept fainting and getting up again to get the damn things iced. Dh was really cross with me, but you can't buy gluten free birthday cakes and I have always made their cakes for them and don't want to stop now just because my stoopid body has other ideas. Hmm

coff33pot · 22/02/2013 01:34

You have a beautiful family :)

And the cakes? just WOW!

BeeMom · 22/02/2013 13:58

The Minecraft cake was actually pretty easy. I baked a sheet cake, then cut pieces off it and stacked them to make the higher levels. The zombie is coming up out of a hole I cut in the cake.

Then I frosted it all with butter cream and covered it all in sugarpaste. The figures are made from rice crisp squares covered in sugarpaste (and held together with toothpicks). If anyone does try it - I'd love to see pictures Grin

If you do Lego Batman, you can do the figure lying on its back, so that the wings are draped out across the cake board made out of sugarpaste (you can even write on the wings that way).

I am trying to think of what to do for DS this year - fortunately his birthday is not until July, so I have a while to muddle it over.

As for gf/cf etc... have you tried using vegetable lard/shortening instead of butter in your buttercream? It sets up essentially the same, whips up nicely, and is a decent substitute if you want to make it at home. I also have a recipe for home made gf sugarpaste if you want/need it.

Lovely photos!

I've seen Bee before in a video you shared of her very own version of the Nativity (which was fab!) but it's great to 'meet' the rest of you.
