Can you get a statement without a diagnosis?

As the title says really! As per my other thread about my 6yo son, we're just starting down the long, long path of assessment for ASD but in the meantime I'm really concerned about the SEN provision for him next year at school.

His school is an Academy and only appears to have one class specifically for children with SEN - and that in itself is a new thing after another parent fought tooth and nail for them to appoint a SENCO rather than pushing all the kids with SN off to other schools Hmm

Once he goes into Yr3 (which will happen in May because of how the Academy structures its academic year) he will go back to being in a MS class without the support of his current teacher. I'm so worried that we'll have a repeat of Yr1 where he fell so far behind and hated school because he just didn't get it. I presume that having a statement will mean the school has to find a way to continue to offer the sort of support he has now, but am I stuck waiting for the dx before I can pursue this?

You do not need a dx to obtain a statement.

Would you still want him to attend this school though if he had a statement in place?. It seems very uncaring.

Look at IPSEA's website for more infomration on the whole statementing process www.ipsea.org.uk. There are also model letters that can be used.

Thanks, will look at the link now.

The school are improving with regards to special needs. His current teacher is amazing and DS adores her, so I want to stay put for the time being. I have an older son and as of September my dd will be at the school too so moving ds2 to another would be very tricky to organise. The other schools within walking distance of where we live are pretty diabolical sadly!
