Does anyone know what the sign is where you put your hands together and interlock your fingers? It's probably something totally obvious, but I have no idea what it is!

He's signing 'sad' plus this other thing... ???

Not sure if you'll get a response quick enough - but you could try asking on the Makachat forum on the makaton.org website.

Sounds like he's signing W (does he have any friends whose name starts with that letter?)

I've attached a link to BSL alphabet

i know we used w for wee wee, (as opposed to general 'toilet' sign IYSWIM)

Could it be 'friends', I know you don't interlock your fingers to sign it but it is the way that my son signs it. Could he be having issues with another child? When does he usually sign it, that might help us to think what it could be.

Hi! Sounds like 'why' to me, same sign also used for 'because' sometimes. Maybe he is asking why someone is sad or alternatively trying to explain why? That's how I wold interpret it anyway.

Sorry utter cockup there, meant to say WHEN! WHEN not why! DH has just looked at me as if I am mad. Total mixup on my part! I blame the wine. but 'when' is def what I mean!

MommyUpNorth · 09/02/2013 22:04

thanks so much for all the replies!

'W' was the first thing we thought of, but don't know anyone at all with a W in either first or last name. Wendy from Bob the Builder maybe, but he hasn't watched it for years!

We know his version of 'friends', and he would use 'toilet' or 'nappy' if he needed changing (sometimes!).

I'll look in the Makaton books we have for 'why' and 'because' and see if they look like it.

He learned 'sad' this week at school & has been using it loads... mostly appropriately. Am wondering if it's another sign he picked up at school for something there... but he was just signing this when DH was doing keepie uppies with a football which he normally loves!? He carried on with the signs even when it stopped. Another DS was playing a video game, I was trying to engage signing DS with a puzzle. And the dog was wandering about... anything in there give any other clues?

Thanks so much though for all the thoughts!

Will look up 'when'! :) Thanks!

Unfortunately the schools are on the half term now, so may not find out for another week! frustrating for both of us!

I feel your frustration! Have had this so often with dd now 16. She is so patient poor love and really perseveres with communicating despite our failings... Hope you get it!
