AIBU to be impressed that ds made a giraffe out of mega bloks? and other play question

... because he will be 7 in a couple of weeks? as most of you know ds is undiagnosed but is a sensory seeker and awaiting referal just incase anything else is going on. Ds wont play with lego he gets upset with it because its too fiddly, he loves ds2's baby blocks though, he usually makes a tower with them or a tardis only but today he made a giraffe it actually had the right shape i couldnt stop smiling! he even said mum why are you smiling! i know if i shared this happiness elsewhere i would be looked at very strangely.

The other question is afterwards i made a point of playing with the bloks with him, we pretended they were daleks and the dr and a tardis etc at first ds would say 'er thats not a dalek ship thats square not round!' but he was happy to pretend so the blocks were all sorts in our game and he loved it but i noticed that he wanted to control everything constantly he kept saying 'you be this..you do this...this is such and such...' whenever i tried to change it he would say 'no no no no its not happening, but but your wrong its this...' if i kept pushing my way he would turn his back to me and cut me off then turn back and take control again, this went on for 45 mins, he wasnt angry or anything at me trying to change things, i would laugh at his insistence and then he would laugh but still wouldnt budge.

Does this sound like 'normal' play or not, not sure i know what 'normal' play actually is!

It's progress. Smile Maybe not quite age appropriate NT play, what with him wanting to be in control and being reluctant to pretend some things were 'other' but still progress. I guess you have to remember that ASD is a developmental disorder, with some areas more delayed than others, but the DC still do develop and make progress in most if not all areas.

(Also, we aren't necessarily that good at knowing much about NT development here. Grin )

Thanks ellen, i know at this age i should probably be impressed with complex lego building but still its something. He asked me if i will buy him his own mega bloks for christmas, ive convinved him just to play with his brothers.

I thought of that after i posted but didnt want to post elsewhere in the forums dont think others would 'get it' I know in here some people have a few dc's both NT and SN, where as i only have ds1 to go on and im not sure where is is, ds2 is only little still (17 months)
