Help with in-year place application for DS with ASD

Hi,
We have recently arrived from abroad and need to apply for school places for all three DC, including DS with ASD and ADHD.
As we have been living in another country we don't have a statement and I want to apply for one. Previously DS has had 15 hours 1-1 so I'm hoping we'll be eligible, but anyway, thats another battle.
What I'm needing help with is what to do now. We have visited three schools that are the closest to where we live. One was crap. The other two quite nice, but full and neither were terribly positive about taking on DS.
So could someone help me get my head around what to do now. I'm aware its a terrible time of year to arrive, but really, that is not the DCs fault. I would really like them to go to a local-ish school, but most importantly I want DS to be in a supportive school.
So should I put in my in-year application and hope he gets one of the mediocre schools and start applying for statement. Or should I keep visiting schools further afield until I find a better selection and then do my in-year application.
Arrggh. Confused.
Can't seem to find any information locally from other parents of ASD kids about what schools might be good.

Have you spoken to the LA about your DS? See what they suggest?

Yes but I think I just spoke to a junior junior type. She just said - put an application in.
