antibiotics babble returns

my ds (3.5) recently started nursery and hence caught a nasty bug which needed some antibiotics to recover. she has delayed speech and language concerns and is under the SALT, but whilst on the medicine she started to babble. 3 weeks after the last dose there is no babbling at all. coincidence or connection? any thoughts?

Could be the anti biotics or it could be because she is under the weather? Ds's speech goes south when he is tired or ill.

Babbles a regression right? She now has better speech?

Antibiotics are truly nasty, but necessary stuff. Same as vaccines. They do damage our kids.

Chances are your child has an inner ear or vestibular problem and has had quite a few courses of antibiotics in her life.

My DS is under a cease therapist (homeopath). First she gave him a detox for his vaccines - which worked very well. Over the Xmas holidays we're doing an antibiotic detox. Will be able to tell you later if that too works.

at that age my DS would go backwards with echolalia etc when tired or poorly. so are you sure it was the medicine rather than the actual illness. Sounds like she was so poorly that there was no choice other than the antibiotics though.

I'm assuming that the babble is a regression, but do you mean that the babbling is progress. there is a slightly controversial diagnosis of a subset of children with OCD and other developmental issues, where it is felt that strep throat is a trigger, and antibiotics can help with the behaviour etc issues ocd.about.com/od/typesofocd/a/PANDAS_OCD.htm, I've only really heard of it in the context of sudden onset OCD rather than language delay though.

My DD has been sick and barely speaking for the last five days and now she's feeling better, she's talking again, probably better than before she was ill. I find she is a lot more 'different' when she's not feeling great. Just withdraws into her own world and doesn't reach out to me as effectively or communicate very well. Maybe it's just such an effort for your DD to use her language skills that she reverts to baby talk when she's not well?

Do you mean the child improved with antibiotics? I've heard of autism improving with antibiotics, e.g. this story on the French news (should have English subtitles), or this set of interview transcripts

My Dd babbles for a bit then stops regularly so it could just be a coincidence

There's some peer reviewed research on fever improving autism symptoms

WRT antibiotics there is quite a lot of research linking autism (I know your ds doesn't have autism op but just posting for similarity) with gut bacteria - or rather than 'wrong' types of gut bacteria. Gut flora can of course be affected by antibs.

Was told you should always use probiotic when on antibiotics cause you are supposed to replace the good stuff thats stripped away with the antibiotics

thanks every1. not sure where we r with our daughter we just recently had our 2nd review and like the 1st one, they think all is well apart from speech and language delay. we have made great progress but her speech can be unclear at times, at home and at nursery. the recent taking of antibiotics was her 1st and i did wait until her temp. was between 38.8 - 39.1 centigrade b4 administering calpol because i was scared of high temp. convulsions. so how high can the fever go, b4 u should administer the calpol? and hence with the antibiotics, came the babbling, although now stopped and hence no more babbling. all her traits were dismissed with the associate specialist community paed. tiptoe walking could be a habit although i know its sensory because she's always fidgety when sitting on chairs and will sit with 1 leg under her bottom and the other on tiptoe on the floor. lining up objects was a phase. repeating words, phrases and questions were expected because she is sp. and lang. delayed or anxious. and give her, her due, my girl did great at the review and the paed. didn't c anything un towards and hence she has been discharged. i'm not happy but my partner is delighted with 'i told u so'. i do c a great many traits, some she has out grown (attachment to objects hence needed to have something in her hand all the time). some like the tiptoeing continues from 18 months and things like finger flicking comes and goes. i've struggled endlessly with vaccines and she has only had her primary course and really having a hard time with the measles even has a single jab. i did makeup my mind 4 her 2 have the single measles and then i saw something on autism uk where a solicitor firm is taking the mmr and mr concerns of parents against the manufacturer and hence i'm in limbo land again. although my wife states she must have it done. and alas a great stress on our relationship. i was thinking of asking 4 a 2nd opinion or ot referral but that most probably will b dismissed because she has been discharged, plus not that 'bad' in terms of her behaviour. where 2 go now?
