Help!!!Dd wont take her medicine.

DD is 6 and a half and has just been diagnosed with ADHD. She was prescribed tablets to take by her paeditition and was due to start them today!!! Well I tried for over 20 minutes but she became so hysterical so i had to give up and she went to school today having not taken it.
i tried everything and have tried to call her paeditition to see if there is anything I can do as you cant break it and she cant chew it!! Paed not working today so have tried gp and am just waiting for him to call back.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance.

I have this with Dd3, not ADHD medication but anything.

She has just had to have a course of antibiotics and I asked for tablets as liquid is a nightmare and ends up getting spilt.

Try putting it in a spoonful of yoghurt, the yoghurt is thick enough to disguise the feel of the tablet going down.

I would resort to serious amounts of positive reinforcement bribery just to get her to try it and aiming towards a bigger reward at the end of the week.

Sorry no other suggestions.

Could you crush it using a mortar and pestel and then put it in a smoothie or baby fruit puree.

Tried all of that this morning but she was having none of it.

The paeditition was quite firm when she said you cant break it up as it has to be whole otherwise I would have put it in a drink and just given it to her.

It sounded like the poor girl was being murdered this morning. If they did it in liquid I would ask for that as she is very good with medicines, just not tablets but even though it is meant for children as well as adults they do not do a liquid form!!!

It is probable slow release foxy that is why, liquid gets into the system too quickly.

Sorry i have no other advice, we had crying, vomiting and wrestling last week with Dd3's anti b's

It is slow release.GP called back.has no advice but will try paed again tomorrow for me and told me not to give it till then.

She had a really bad day at school today and I was worried she would cause of the upset this morning.

What a shame, foxy, there is not much you can do really.

I think maybe setting up a rewards system before you try again might help, how does she respond to this kind of thing?

She doesnt. Am just hoping paeditition can suggest something as obviously she needs it or they wouldnt have prescribed it but i dont want it affecting her at school or really upsetting her either.

She was all set to take it till she tried this morning.

I hope your paed can suggest something too. If he does, let us know and we can all try it.

Dd3 has to have another urine test on wednesday to see if her UTI has gone, if it hasnt we will be back on anti b's.

I think if you can build taking a tablet into your Dd's routine you might have some success but its getting it in the routine that is the problem.

I dont suppose she would take it at school would she??

I know Dd3 would be completely different if she had to take hers at school. If your SENCO is on board he or she might agree to do it for you while she gets used to it.

I know schools like to say that they cant be involved with medication but actually they can, there is just some paper work that has to be done. I can find out what it is called if you think it might help.

Thank you for all the replies. Have been trying with nice things first and she was all for it till she tried the actual tablet. Was also wondering about taking it at school but would still be problem in holidays but will try it if no luck with paeditition.

Will post when they get back to me if they have a suggestion, am sure I am not the only one with this problem.

Gosh DS would be the same,he's going to be the only adult that takes calpol six plus for an hangover :)
He's never had to have anti biotics so I'm sure if he ever needs anything other than calpol I'm going to be tearing my hair out.

my DS has medikinet which is long acting and comes in a capsule form which can either be swallowed hole or you can open the capsules and sprinkle them into a spoonful of food.

Is that for ADHD? Maybe that is what she needs. If I can put something in a drink or food I think she will take it.

We open the long acting melatonin and sprinkle them into a petit filous. Its that or nothing! If you give it with food it will slow down the absorption which is what the outer shell is designed to do. Not sure when the outer coating is designed to break down. May be your chemist will know (pharmacist not the person at the counter). Ask a pharmacist anyway they know all about drug actions. Probably (...definitely!) will have a better answer than the paed.

Thank you. Maybe need to mention that to paed and see what she says and thank you to everyone else as well. If no joy tomorrow will paed I will go to pharmacist on way home from work and see what they say.

Hi sorry only just got back on here, paed finally got back to me on wednesday and we are changing to the mediknet, 8 hour one but pulling it apart and putting into her food. She took it for the first time today for Nanny as nanny had her before school, and was fine so fingers crossed this is the way forward.
