I have a 6 year old who i believe to be on the autustic spectrum but he has not yet been assessed, been back and forth to various agencies with him since he has been 3, he still attends speech and language therapy and social skills groups. I also have an 18 month old DS who was seen by a paediatrician last month and have been told that he is probably autistic and has started to be seen by special needs pre-school and speech and language therapy.
I also have a 10 year old DS who I thought was typical, talked in sentences by 18 months, most milestones that I can remember where on time etc.
I was asked to see the headteacher after school today to discuss DS1, the headteacher is concerned with his lack of empathy, rudeness and sulkiness. She said she had noticed this along with various other teachers and that she also noticed he has very narrow interests, a lack of facial expression and body language and his tone of voice. She is going to set the wheels in motion for an assessment as she thinks he has Aspergers syndrome.
I was really not expecting this, I really thought that DS1 was typical.
Would I not have noticed signs before this if he has Aspergers syndrome? especially as I have ead up a lot on autism with DS2 and 3. He does have obsessions, current one is planes, he spends the evenings talking about planes, thinking about planes and looking on the net to see which planes are in flight and which have just landed. Other obsessions he has had over the years have been trains, romans, vikings, military. He also sniffs his fingers all the time for no reason. I also have a tic disorder.
He also has very effeminate body movements, would this be anything to do with Aspergers syndrome? He doesn't hand flap or spin although he sometimes walk on his toes barefoot as do I and DS2 and DS3.
I am feeling a bit guilty to be honest as I am thinking I may have been a bit hard on him over his rudeness. I feel I may have been expecting something of him that he has been unable to do.
