Anyone used supplements for ADD/ADHD behaviour?

Just wondered whether anyone has tried anything like amino acid supplements - HTP, Taurine for ADD? Or other homeopathic stuff> I have a 7yr old DS with attention issues at school.

He has omega 3 and we are trying the magnesium, zinc supplemets - he has a really healthy diet.

I've been doing Homeopath (cease therapist) with my DS1 who has ASD and am very impressed with the results.

I'm starting DS2 who has Dyspraxia there next week.

Also starting DD on amino acids.....

We tried supplements for quite some time, but they didn't seem to have any effect at all. I'm not sure if that simply means he's not deficient in anything we gave him or what exactly it means. Prescribed meds (for ADHD) are out for him as there is a family history of heart specific problems.

We may try the supplements again when he's a bit older (maybe next year). Never hurts to try.

I tried omega , magnesium and zinc and I didn't notice any difference.

I certainly found all the supplements the kids were taking worked a lot better once they were gluten free / dairy free.

For example DS1 always had bumpy chicken skin on his upper arms which is a sure sign of Omega deficiency. He's been on omega for a year now - but it is only recently when he went GF that the bumpy skin disappeared.

As well as Omega, zinc & magnesium my kids are on B12 and Folate. The combination of that with Gluten Free / Dairy free has been good.

It was the homeopath who suggested he go GF / DF.

waving Indigo!same here stopped my DD running up the walls and a kind of manic laughter, for us diet and supplements have been key.

Here's an interesting site about it all:

Thanks to Indigo, Clare, Shayo and Christmas. I have tried gluten free - no difference and he is by choice pretty much dairy free. Have been reading a lot about HTP, Teatrine, Taurine, GABA and DHAE (I think that's what the last one was). Sent off for afew supplements so will see..............

  • this is slightly weird - been using a liquid form of DMG - only for a few days but DS has been really chatty - he always is, but in a "talking at you" kind of way whereas for example, this evening we had a lovely conversation at the tea table and he talked more about school and what happened today than I think we have ever before put together in the last 3 yrs. Sat reasonably still as well. Obviously v early days so maybe just coincidence.......
