When does a NT child 'get' simple jokes?

Ds keep coming home from school trying to tell me jokes and reallly dosnt get them, from him knock knock? whos there? donut? donut who? donut fat butt! hahaha etc

So i tried some simple jokes with him and he really dosnt get them at all but does think he does and laughs hysterically, i.e

Why do giraffes have such long necks? ds comes up with random reasons as too why....
Because they have smelly feet!! ? ds laughs but says that?s not possible giraffess have hooves not feet!

what do elves learn in school? ds laughs and says how to make xmas stuff, i say no the answer is the elf a bet, hes confused

What do you get when you pour hot water down rabbit holes?" ds - a plant growing in the soil?
"Hot cross bunnies, ds - what does that mean?

now he laughs hysterically and loves playing this 'game' but dosnt 'get' anything even simple jokes is this normal in a 6.9 years child?

the reason i ask is ds does seem to take a lot of things literally and i wonder if jokes are another example of this

Yes. Most children don't get jokes until 7, or even later, but his reactions are interesting.

Dd1 is 8.6 and only gets veryyy simple jokes her particular fave that she retells constantly is what goes round and round and is red all over? Cat in a microwave!! But we had to really explain the answer before she understood it.

really that makes me feel a little better was reading of children 3-5 getting jokes and ds wouldnt understand any of them

thanks, ive noticed Ds seems to not actually get what a joke is at all he thinks its a question so tries to answer rather than wait for the punch line lol

Sorry forgot to add dd1 isn't NT though so not sure about NT kids! Dd has ADHD and some funny quirkiness ;)

My dd2 is 3.3 she repeats jokes parrot fashion that she's heard from gigglebiz but def doesn't get them. But she's not NT either :)

DGS 'got' visual jokes between 2.5 - 3 years old. He's got CP and has speech delay so no idea re verbal jokes. It was Mr Tumble of course

My nearly 9yo DS2 tells the most surreal 'jokes' because he doesn't really 'get' jokes. Knock knock. Who's there? Lettuce. Lettuce who? Lettuce is disgusting.

He only started to 'get' visual jokes about 6 months ago, from watching Justin's House. Which isn't standard fare for most 8yo's. But is his clear favouritest ever telly show.

My LO has just turned 6 and gets jokes and even makes up appropriate ones, he is advanced for his age though. My daughter who is 7 (ASD) has only recently got her first joke without me having to explain it to her...it's got her laughing for days on end!! What is sheep favourite food??....chocolate baaaaaaaaar!!

couthy - i done the lettuce joke with ds yesterday and his reply was something random about freezing lettuce into ice he found his spin on it hilarious though

Children & jokes = very, very, very painful - you probably have 3 years yet before you need to be worried that he doesn't 'get' jokes & to put up with his 'jokes'. Clearly it's a far more complicated concept than we think! I think the odd child 'gets it' early on, but most not until around 9 or so in a 'real' way. Unbelievable really isn't it! Don't buy a joke book - it doesn't help and it just makes you want to boil your head!!

Chipping I quite enjoyed the joke phase and we are getting DS2s collection of Joke Books out for DGC now. Don't be a spoilsport

I definatly wont be buying a joke book! its actually painful when he tries to tell jokes lol he dosnt know when to stop either it went on for an hour and a half and i had to really tell him off to calm him down in the end
