Terrible weekends after weekly boarding

My ds 11 who has asd/ADHD and dyspraxia started a residential school in September and is now boarding Monday to Friday. We fought long and hard to get him into this specialist school as the county council wanted to place him in a mainstream secondary which he absolutely wouldn't have coped with.

The issue we have is that when he comes home at the weekend his behaviour is completely dreadful, far worse than its been for quite a while. He is very hard to manage and I feel like I spend all the weekend telling him off. I just want him to come home at the weekend and have a happy time, but it's just been miserable.

I know it will take a while for things to settle down, but was wondering if anyone else has been through this and has any tips or hints for a happier household!

Sorry not ahead of you but following in your wake. I shall watch your thread with interest as I am in the middle of just such a fight and am concerned how he will be at weekends. A rl friend has a DS that boards termly - I thought this was awful but then she mentioned the difficulty that parents have trying to get DC to return to school on Sunday evening whilst the rest of the family snuggles up. DS did not start secondary in September this year and although he is OK during the week (provided I don't ask him to do anything of course) weekends are a nightmare because he spends all day with his brother who now loses it and starts throwing things. DS then runs away screaming that his brother (5 years younger) is trying to kill him. I can't leave them is the same room together.

I'm another following in your wake waiting to hear about provision for my DS...

IamHow has this weekend been so far? A little fraught in the KOKO household. Hope things are more settled for you this weekend.

whatthe DS2's (6) catchphrase atm is 'what the ..' but at least he doesn't complete the phrase (at least not at home)

I went to boarding school, and i remember how hard it was adjusting to new rules and routines. New bedtime, eating with lots of people, the noise of other boarders, the lack of privacy etc. I suspect that he is probably a bit home sick during the week and is struggling to make the adjustments going to and fro between school and home. I know it's very hard for you, but harder for him I suspect. Is there any way that you can take him out every other weekend, until he gets into the swing of it?
