Omg just had a SEN meeting for parents and head dept and I cannot believe hat head teacher said!!!

General meeting on parent chosen topic. 8 parents turned up and discussion led on to the enormous amount of children with speech and land difficulties etc. HT then said there needs to be more done such as early intervention in preschools but then he said " but we all know the problems stem from home" !!!

I am so angry!!!!

Omg. Only just seen this but I would have had to say something if i had been there. That is sometimes the case but definately not always, my dd who is 6 has speech and language isses but these could well be linked to other issues she may have.

We have always done what we have told to and have always talked to her etc.

Not that I agree AT ALL with the head teacher making such a sweeping statement , which is a load of tosh. As a special educational needs co-ordinator for a large setting I know a large proportion of my children who are having speech and language intervention at the moment are because english is not their first language. Not all children with English as an additional language need SALT. But some do , and my group at the moment do. Has your school got a wide range of cultures and backgrounds , perhaps this is where the head was coming from , although really badly put and not justified. I know from a lot a lot of experience that not all children who attend salt do so because english is not their first language but perhaps the head didnt think about what he was saying ....well lets hope so anyway. Comming from an early years setting I would like to tell your headteacher that we are doing as much as we can in early years however in our LA we have 3 speech and language therapists who are so overworked our refferalls are currently 4 months long. I would also like to tell him that we are mostly the first contact that a parent has with the education system and there are so many things we have to get families and children 'ready' for in time for school , if he didnt have us his reception staff would be working a lot harder !!!
