Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Did someone have a list of Q's to ask when looking for schools?

Hi,
As the title says did someone have a list of good questions to ask when visiting schools for a child with s/n ? I'm sure someone posted one a while ago and I thought I saved it but now it's dissapeared.
Scarily we are at that stage!
Thanks
Sarah

MS schools? What are your DS's difficulties? Will he have a statement, need 1:1?

How will you support my DS with his language/social skills/toiletting/behavioural/educational/medical issues? Etc etc What training would they be prepared to offer to relevant staff?

The toiletting one can be surprisingly challenging for a MS school, it'll give you a good feel for their willingness to do the right thing. (If it's an issue of course)

Language, does he have SALT? Would school work with SALT following recommendations? Does anyone (TA, teacher) have experience of taking small groups in SALT activities?

Social skills, does the school use circle of friends, does it have involvement with ASD outreach etc. Could it support your DS at lunch and break to get involved in some structured games.

Behavioural, how would the school handle meltdowns, tantrums? Would it appreciate that NT methods of sanctions may not work and may be counter productive. Have they used ABC analysis methods to help recognise triggers (antecedents) and apply helpful consequences rather than ones which are self defeating? Is the school secure? Could your DS escape from the playground, classrooms and leave the premises?

Educational? Really depends on his difficulties, how long is a piece of string?

Medical? Experience of a care plan, similar to toiletting, staff prepared to be trained in use of equipment, giving medicine?

There's loads more, I'm sure.

Thank you so much, lots of things there to add to my list.
We will be looking for SN schools with a statement, but as we have to go through applying for a MS anyway even though he's unlikely to go to one I want to make sure i'm asking the right questions there as well so they know what all the issues with him would be. It's all so complicated isn't it!

My son is autistic, with lots of developmental delays, sensory issues etc and he also has hypermobile joints. Toiletting I'm sure will be an issue, not toilet trained at all yet and not showing any signs of understanding yet either.

I just want to make sure i'm fully prepared for the whole thing in order to get it right.
Thank you again for taking the time to reply, I have other friends who are looking at MS schools so I will pass on your questions to them as well.
