Anyone with Experience of LEA/Stamenting/Private Diagnoisis in Bucks?

Hi My Son is thought to be on the Spectrum after several SLT visits and OT input to sensory issues.

We thought/hoped/prayed he was much higher functioning than he is, - Ie very little receptive language, and it is now clear to everyone working with him including his nursery (private), that he will need to be statemented for his protection before he starts school and he won't cope in mainstream-(possibly be fine with a unit).

We are awaiting ASD Diagnosis in Bucks this is made by the Pead not a panel , but I am worried she may deffer for 6 months due to his age (2) although it is very clear from observations and SLT/OT reports/HV witnessing behavior , he has been in the system since 15 months due to concerns.

I have been advised that to apply for a statement takes 6 months and I will be turned down on the first application and have to appeal this could take over a yr so to put in for one now.

According to my OT bucks are really cutting statements and she feels even with all my reports detailing his various issues, without a diagnosis even a working one we will get turned down and will have to fight hell and high water for every drip of provision.

I then asked about getting a private diagnosis if this will be quicker by someone like Daphnee Keen who also works in the NHS, she informed me that even though she works within the NHS it would be a diffrent trust so the LEA may choose not to accept it!

I feel Stuck has anyone had experience with Bucks LEA and private diagnosis or statementing on needs alone without a firm diagnosis.

Any advice welcome - :)

Apply for the statement.

Would also suggest you apply for the statement now (and ignore any naysayers).

Statements are ideally issued on basis of need of one, not diagnosis.

Be prepared for a long battle and to be turned down at first request.

Seek independent advice from organisations like IPSEA, ACE, SOSSEN and arm yourself too with knowledge of the SEN Code of Practice (available online).
