HIgher rate mobility question

If you are awarded higher rate mobility for your child and are elligible not to pay road tax, are you allowed to use the car to go to work occasionally when your child is not with you?

We've just been awarded higher rate, and Dh says we can't apply for the road tax exemption because he'll need to use the car once a month to go to work and we're only allowed to use the car to take our son places/ go shopping to buy him food etc.

The websites aren't much help.

Can anyone shed any light?

yes.
I asked similar questions a few years ago & both the DWP & the DVLA said they would not expect families to swap cars about etc & make life impracticle and an element of common sense is applied.
I explained that the free tax would be on our family car & ds2 would not always be in the vehicle & they were happy with that, said it was a benifit & would not be cost effective for a family to fund a second car.

This is of course very different to a motability vehicle which is for the use of the disabled person.

This will be fine, motability cars can also be used for work commuting by the parent and do not always have to have the disabled person in them.

Fantastic! Thank you!

hairy is right, i drop ds2 off at school & then go on to work. No need to swap cars etc.

I asked this when I first applied and was told that as long as the journey involved something for the child with disabilities eg:buying something they needed etc. it was fine. I think it may be a bit of a grey area..but going to work/earning money benefits the child. We certainly have always used ours as a family vehicle.I don't know anything about motability cars though.
