Cheaper alternatives to IPAD for memory/speecha and language practice?

I am looking into funding for an IPAD for DD hopefully to use for communication purposes and other apps for speech and language and memory etc. If this doesn't happen has anyone had success with a cheaper tablet? Or the leapfrog one aimed at just children?

Maybe try Family Fund, which supports families with a child with disabilities to access support and resources (i.e. gives money)

thanls kieran but we had already applied to them for something else when i thought about ipads (dd has since been using a family members one so i realised how great they are)

Thanks Leonie I will have a look at those now. £80 I can do, SALT has referred dd for a communication aid assessment so she should get something for school fingers crossed and IPADs are just £££! However I only know about apps for IPADS so wasn't sure if it would be the same (clueless!)

Was just reading this thread, as interested in android tablets and saw your last post used2bthin.

Wanted to say good luck with the induction. Smile If you have her today we'll have two MNSN board babies born on the same day - must be something in the air. Grin

Leonie, if you don't mind me asking, which Archos tablet have you got?

I've looked at a few but there seem to be a lot of complaints about screen sensitivity, charging issues and freezing/hanging. I think it'd be a great idea for ds1, but keep chickening out due to the reviews.

Ooo exciting used2, hope things got moving after you posted and you now have your beautiful baby in your arms.

Do come back on and update us. Smile

moosemama · 16/06/2012 11:29

Thanks for the advice Leonie, I will get dh to read your posts, as he's the technical bod in this house and will probably understand it all better than me.

I love the idea of having something like this in my bag so I always have something for ds1 when things get too much. We used to only need a book, but sadly he's no longer able to concentrate on reading when there's noise and other sensory stuff going on around him.

Update on two things- one - baby Heidi was born at midight on sunday!! Horrible birth but lovely baby and we are now home and so far DD1 has been amazing, really caring and saying "careful thay MY bab" whenever anyone other than me or her holds her.

two-we got the android tablet not sure which one it is but DD1 very happy with it and we have already been impressed by what she can do on it.

Congratulations used2 and welcome to the world little Heidi. Smile

I was thinking about you yesterday and wondering if I should post and ask, but didn't want to be cheeky and thought you'd post your good news when you were ready.
