So, so excited.....

Background - DD is 27 mths and has Down's. We've been doing intensive physio (both hydro & normal) with her for the past 18 mths trying to encourage her to stand.

About 3 weeks ago she started to pull herself to standing, which we were still pretty excited about.

Yesterday, whilst she was at nursery, she decided to pull herself to standing against a brick trolley & then just started wallking with it. The whole nursery (incl. kids) were cheering her on they were so excited! Smile My little sweetheart, always a fan of the applause, then refused to walk again unless everyone cheered, so the poor nursery carers had to spend the whole day cheering & clapping!!! Grin Although they really didn't seem to mind, they were as excited as we are & took loads of photos of her first steps to put on the wall!

So i've spent all of last night & this morning holding her hand whilst she walks along & giggles! I'm so, so proud of her!!!!!!

devientenigma · 31/05/2012 10:47

thats great news proud

It feels like it's never going to happen doesn't it (ds also has ds)

We also had intensive physio from 3 month, obviously for other stuff which changed along the way.

Is she still going to have physio though?

Sounds like she also has good role models.

Tell her to keep up the good work and you!!

skrullandcrossbones · 31/05/2012 10:48

Thanks everyone - I'm still smiling 24 hrs later!!!

Hi Devient - it definitely felt like it would never happen!

Yes, we've still got another 4 weeks of hydro scheduled. We also currently see the head of physio every 2 weeks (once a month at home & once a month at the nursery) where she comes and checks how DD is getting on with her exercises and to watch her move about in a 'normal' enviroment

Are they planning adaptations or anything?

My ds was around 55 months when he literally stood and took a step for the 1st time, we were ecstatic, however at 11 yo he still needs his stairlift/wheelchair etc.

Does she wear piedro boots?

all just things to think about Smile

proudmum74 · 31/05/2012 12:00

To be honest I haven't told her physio team yet, as we're seeing them tomorrow morning.

She's been wearing Piedro boots for the past 9 months & wears them pretty much all day. They do really seem to help with her standing, to the point that she'll go & get them and try and put them on herself if I forget first thing.

Her hydro therapist mentioned we may need to consider a walking frame once she's starting to try and walk, as her balance isn't great and normal kids walkers don't offer the support she needs, so i'll ask her about that when I see her tomorrow.

Well done to your dd! :o

DeWe · 31/05/2012 12:10

I just love the picture of her waiting for the applause before she will walk. She sounds gorgeous!

proudmum74 · 31/05/2012 12:14

thank you! my DD will be on the stage one day! Smile

What's even funnier is when she hears music on the radio & she just stops whatever she's doing & starts dancing - I sometimes have to leave the room so she can't see me laughing, as it is sooo cute!
