Had a rough day. Moved across the US 3 weeks ago. Had DS's first doctor's appointment today to get re-reffered for SALT (DS has been going for 2 years) and get a form filled in so DS can attend preschool.

The doctor did a swell job of making me feel inadequate because DS wasn't in "school". A) We just moved less than a month ago. B) He attended a program the last 2 years just not a "school" as such but run by early childhood professionals through the YMCA C) He had lots of friends who didn't mind his speech issues or obsession with construction equipment D) I'd just explained all this to him and GIVEN HIM THE STATE HEALTH ASSESSMENT FORM that any preschool he goes to will need.

Just on and on and on about the difficulties of getting services, I'd better take a case worker to the next IEP meeting, and on and on and on. And now we have a social worker assigned to us!

I've only moved here THREE WEEKS AGO! And even though I told him all the things we did at our old house, it didn't matter.

Then DS had the mother of all meltdowns because they needed to draw blood to check for lead poisoning and anemia Shock. I was told his was standard procedure based on where we were coming from.

And here I thought I was doing well.

Venting over. Thank you.

Has she got a dx? What would the blood tests hope to prove? Has she got any signs of being anaemic?

Sorry you're having a rough day :(

Diagnosis is apraxia of speech - on the moderate end. Two years ago he had about 4 words. Maybe. Now you can't shut him up Grin. We've been working mostly on articulation. The old SALT said he's got a good vocabulary and in his discharge papers said he's made excellent progress and many of the errors he's making now are age appropriate. Although he is still often hard to understand because he talks too fast.

I have absolutely no idea why he's being tested for either anemia or lead poisoning. Honestly, I think it's just a box that has to be ticked.

We've got 2 more preschools to look at - one tomorrow and one Monday and then we'll make a decision. I just don't know how I could have done things much faster than what I did. I recognize I've got to get him back in the swing of things but I thought it'd be easier where we are now because it's much more urban and there's more selection of everything. At our last house, there was literally one private SALT in addition to the school district.

I also spent an hour tracking down the right person to talk to at our new school district to get his IEP transferred.

DH is working late tonight and he won't see the big deal since the ball has now started rolling.

Sounds like the doctor had a great bedside manner. Hmm

Good luck with the preschools. It's not like he's been missing important exams! Hope you have a better day tomorrow.
