Just having one of those weeks that I feel like I should be doing more to help dd but don't know what to do.
Been waiting on SALT on nhs since sept last year, despite seeing 3 people + dd being assessed/having reports no actual therapy has started yet (dd is down to be on next 5 week course starting in a few weeks apparently) saw a lovely private SALT before xmas for advice and report who said dd has significant+severe communication disorder+gave us a few ideas to work on. Saw paed in april who said dd has autistic tendancies but wants to see again in 6months as still very young.
Her understanding is getting better but still poor+understands actions rather than verbal commands, she has at most 10 words. I have been doing hanen itttt and now more than words since around nov last year and give her supplements omega3, magnesium, zinc+b vits and a healthy diet.
My problem is progress is so slow and if I'd have known nhs salt would take so long I'd have started private sessions with the other salt (she has said she will do sessions with dd in between in 5 weeks course by nhs but that's taking ages to actually start)
I work 5 days 9-3pm (+if I could change that I would) so don't feel like I'm spending enough time doing it myself (I try get the ideas from more than words in at bath time, while having food+playing etc)
Dd is 3 in september and due to start school in Jan nxt year-what would you be doing now pls? Should I just be patient+wait for this 5 week course to start?

Can you apply for the free 500quid cerebra salt voucher? We did and it helped immensly to fund private salt while we waited for nhs. Check out cerebra website

Thanks chundle that sounds good ill definitely try for that as it is expensive to go private

nhs salt provision was similar for us. took forever, DD just moved from waiting list to waiting list. in the end i made a complaint to PALS. the head of Salt called me within 3 days, apologised and DD started therapy shortly after. the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

also, have you considered applying for DLA? might help you to fund a private Salt...

Hi chockjunkie, how is ur dd doing? SALT said she thinks I will be surprised at how well dd will come along after these 5 weeks of therapy (I'm afraid I'm a bit sceptical after spending around 8 months getting a handful of words out of dd but I do hope she is right) how did u find the SALT when it actually got started?
I havnt thought about DLA as dd has no dx of anything and won't be gng back to paed until Sep-does that matter?

Hi Zzzzz
Thanks for all of that, we don't have an ipad but I have been looking at them and would love to get one when we are able to (I will write 'buddy bear' down so I can look it up when we get one
Dd loves jumping so we actually got her a junior trampoline last wknd+its a huge hit (shame we have had rain most of week)
Ur right about the praise, dd loves praise+clapping for her, she will go fetch her dad+make him join in clapping too lol!
She does like music, what do you mean by more focused music therapy pls?

Dd has just started to count 1-5 and attempts 6-12 sometimes but not very clear (we play a game with her wooden clock) she likes counting 1-5 on my fingers+attempting on her own fingers now, I do try colours when we play her shape sorter as she has always liked that toy but hasn't attempted saying them yet. I have just got her to say ready, steady go (although it sounds a bit like 'sedi sedi gowa') this is a big breakthrough as she knows I will do the activity (let the balloon go etc) on 'go'. This was a big step in her understanding she could use words to make something happen. Dd does not say mama either.
I will look into music therapy on nhs or maybe see if I can get a one off private session to see if that suits dd and if she responds to it. Thanks

Our voucher came through within 3 weeks with a list of locally approved salts. Not sure if you need dla or not I can't remember. Def apply for dla my dd has no dx and we get it x

Oh damn just looked at cerebra and they aren't doing that grant anymore but will fund salt sessions through their normal grant service

osospecial · 10/05/2012 14:07

Thanx chundle, what happens if I apply now+the nhs therapy starts before the voucherr arrives? Can I still use it for additional private sessions? Thanx I will look into dla as that wld help towards getting more help :)
