Ds 12 in lots of trouble again at school, can someone help me work out how to handle the meeting with senior staff?

Ds1 is 12. He is in a grammar school in Germany (automatic 3 tier selection for all secondary school pupils)

The pastoral support is much less in Germany than in UK.

Ds is clever, but is massively underachieving. Either because he has this fear of failure or he is arrogant about his abilities vs. needing to actually learn and work too.

Last year he unfortunately played up with a kid who hates school and he turned from being v. hard working and ambitious and conscientious to a lazy to rag who hates school. I do think he found it boring and too easy, but now it's picking up, and not so easy.

Good thing, this friend is off the scene & ds attitude seems to be improving but he has lost his mojo if you like. He was dx with ADD, but doesn't take any meds/ have any support for it. He is v. forgetful and chaotic, and now resistant to any help from us.

Sorry for long preamble. A couple of weeks ago told me he had detention, but was v. vague why or with whom. He forgot to go. I was with him when he realised and he shrieked in horror and begged me to lie for him, so I know he did forget.

Anyway, I phone to discuss with his class teacher who is no longer kind, understanding, 'gets ds' but cold, angry, tough shit, he has to learn, cutting him no more slack, threatens with exclusion!. An official warning arrives from the school.

(I assume cos he's forgotten detention). couple of days later, we get a second official warning from school, this one IS cos of the detention, so 1st one was for bad behaviour in class - but only weeks after the actual bad behaviour?)

I have to attend big meeting with senior staff and ds. I have suggested before putting him on report and they refused saying they haven't got time to spoon feed every kid.

He has been punished (imo severely) he knows our expectations. Dunno what else I can do. Don't want to look feeble in front of teachers or angry they not cooperate with me/ help re ADD etc.

I sympathise with you. Having lived in Germany, I understand the difference between the level of care in the school system there and in the UK. The attitude we found was that the staff turned up and delivered the lesson and if the kids didn't listen/understand/work themselves, then tough. There was no interest in the kids at all. The school was the main reason we left and came back to the UK. Sorry I can't really offer any advice - I hope someone else comes along for you.

The school should have issued the warning for the behaviour at the time of the bad behaviour, not several weeks after - that seems remiss.

Glad you understand system I'm coming from. Actually I have been otherwise v. happy with the school.

Ds1 teacher really seemed to like and get him, but he's clearly gone too far and he's lost her sympathy and support.. Actually feels like she's gunning for him.

I don't understand why the teacher didn't phone or write a note saying he was being a problem, rather than let him apparently disturb lessons for x amount of time then get mad and issue him a detention, then he forgets and issues him basically 2 official warnings after the event.

I do think they have been wrong in letting the situation develop without involving me, and 2 official warning is imo too heavy handed, and annoyed they rejected my report suggestion, which I genuinely think would be a big help.

But I want the meeting to go well. I do not accept my son should behave badly or be allowed to get away with disturbing the lesson, or failing to attend detentions etc. But she sees it as wilful defiance, rather than ADD forgetfulness/lack of concentration.

I guess I am unsure how I should handle it - be apologetic, be annoyed, one of the teachers there I know is v. senior but v. waffly... can see lots of talking but no solutions. I can tell him off, ground him, confiscate his iPod, give him extra chores etc etc, but I can't sit next to him in class..... (tough I'll threaten and offer to). He doesn't need (only endless ) telling off, we need a solution or support in place.

I'm mentally going back to report.....

Just returned from horrific parents evening. Most of teachers seemed genuinely pissed off with him. Almost without exception got. Immense like chaotic, forgetful, disorganized, inattentive, day dreaming. Am thinking we reconsider the meds for him?

He got a dx from a child psych in Switzerland.

He receives no support at all (he has 2 bro with ADHD who take med)

Unfortunately, I just attended a parents evening which was humiliatingly horrific and he has been behaving v. badly and as a result has lost the goodwill of the teacher who did like him and understand his problems.

I guess the biggest change needs to come from him, in his attitude, but I don't know how to make that happen.

I know only he can make it happen, and he needs to want it. We have threatened with changing schools.

The school he is at is v. good, and v. close. But pastoral care v. poor (normal here, many schools far worse).

I have a meeting on Tuesday with the out-of-favour teacher and a v. good senior teacher.

I have made suggestions in the past (e.g. daily report) but it#s just not done here. I will try again, and ask for solutions. But I'm not sure what to ask for, how to manage intuition or what help I can or should be getting for ds.

Is it too late to be looking at med intervention? Dh thinks that it is his attitude that's the problem (lazy, truly believing he doesn't need to work, and now, sadly, being rude to staff) and as it's an attitude problem, it is not his ADD therefore that's a false path to go down. I'm not sure, worried and confused about how to proceed.

Music (listening to, plays drums, starting to write songs w friends), playing computer games, reading.

Spoke to a sort of school advisory type person and he will accompany me to Tuesday meeting thank goodness

Thanks for suggestions. Meeting was postponed due to staff illness. Spoke briefly to senior teacher when she called to cancel and she says she bass seen improvement,so fingers crossed it keeps up
