ASD son becoming violent - any tips

That's it really, he's five, being assessed for HFA and has up until now been a placid, laid back chap. Unfortunately, he's just discovered how to hit and kick (probably learnt from his older sister)

He becomes fixated on something (Saturday - Ben 10 socks in Primark, lining them up on the shop floor last night - playing with dd's guinea pigs - when it was time to get ready for bed), we try and move him away from the 'fixation', he starts to lash out - hitting, kicking etc.

This is a new behavoir, which we'd like to nip in the bud, before it gets out of hand (and he does it to class mates)

I did say to him on Saturday (during the Primark incident) that I was leaving and would wait for him by the door. Cue woman running up to me asking if he was my son....grrrrr, unfortunately DS is very small for his age, so it does look like I'm abandoning a toddler.

Warning first, some form of visual countdown (eg read amber green or timer, we can now just use five fingers to count down until 0). As to go reassurance that what you doing next will be ok but that he can line the sock up again sometime/at home.

If you do have to move him, move him totally do not let him get away with going straight back, else it will be twice as bad as next time. if necessary remove the source of the fascination as opposed to him.

Mine wouldn't care if you left sadly we have tested this theory with a puddle at the park and a convenient bush. I was hid behind the bush for some time before I had to give up and pick him him

In the primark situation had the count down not worked I probably would have (quickly) removed the socks at zero and stood between child and socks. Source of fascination removed i should be easier it move child.
