'does she have downs?'

something that has been said about dd2 before now. i dunno, does she? i dont think so, but she does have a bit of a 'look' about her. i dont think she looks like she has DS, but there is soemthing 'otherworldly' (lol, no other way to describe it, not i na bad way either) about her. she looks like me, but not really IYKWIM. i am trying hard to word this so as not to be insenstive, but its hard. i dont mean to be honest. just finding it hard.

she is waiting to be seen at CDC, i dont have much to do with 3years old at a normal level (my neice is incrediably bright and advanced so cant comapre), so dont have a clue. i know she is behind what dd1 was, but not sure how much. dd1 is a bit 'slow on the uptake' at times, and is away with the fairies the rest of the time or she is bust being a fairy lol.

Ignore me if I am butting in, but I think you may have misread what Enid said earlier Misdee:

"she is so cute

look I will post that pic of dd1

sorry to say that I think she really does look as though she may have downs

but she doesnt

By misdee on Wednesday, 8 February, 2006 6:15:26 PM

she does doesnt she? not me being paranoid."

I read this as Enid saying that she thought her own daughter, Enid's dd, looked like she had Downs. I also read it as Misdee thinking that Enid was saying that Misdee's dd looked like she had Downs.

Probably doesn't matter anyway but this could be a touchy subject I guess.

They are both gorgeous btw!

Enid · 08/02/2006 18:39

oh god yes I meant my dd1, not yours

I think MY dd1 DOES look as though she may have DS

Enid · 08/02/2006 18:39

but she hasnt

misdee · 08/02/2006 18:41

yes i am half asleep. part of me thinks with dd2 some days she does look more DS than others, but i have to say with your 1st pic enid your dd does, but the 2nd one she doesnt.

OP posts:
Enid · 08/02/2006 18:41

misdee · 08/02/2006 18:50

i know i am/was being silly. but one comment icould cope with, just brush it off as someone being rather silly. but when its several comments and some close together (a couple this year already, but dd2 has been ill and rather bruised ) and just looks more tired round her eyes.

This is really interesting - my dd (aged nearly 3) looks just like yours - I didn't realise there was a term for it. I remember asking the HV about it when she was a baby.

tamum · 08/02/2006 19:04

No, not remotely, in answer to your question!

Geekgrrl, she's gorgeous

Hi Misdee, up until today i didn't know what an epicanthal fold was, after reading various threads etc I have concluded that my ds 2 definately has them. I had often though that there was something unusual about the corners of his eyes but couldn't work out what it was. Anyway just to say a deffo not DS here, despite the EF and wide set eyes, and flat bridge, but still a no, he is 2 and 1/2.

dejags · 08/02/2006 19:45

how would one know if a child is DS i.e. if nobody picked it up at a regular check?

I think my DS has these folds and wide set eyes - he has a very very round face and is a really big boy (wears 2-3 year old clothing aged 17 months).

In all other respects he is just a normal little boy - very agile (was walking confidently by 12 months), very affectionate and trying to talk.

You have me thinking now - should I worry?

dejags · 08/02/2006 19:46

Misdee - I think both of ours are unusually big - has your DD's growth tailed off now that she is getting older?

hub2dee · 08/02/2006 19:47

And where, misdee, is OSCAR ?

All of 'em are gorge BTW.

starlover · 08/02/2006 19:47

my best friends brother really, really looks like he has DS. he is 27 now and still does!
but he doesn't.

geekgrrl · 08/02/2006 19:55

dejags, kids with DS are usually v. small. Dd is nearly five but still in 2-3 for quite a few clothes. Dh and I are both v. tall and so are our other children.

And the developmental delay does become quite noticable once they are 1 - 1.5 - as a very rough guide, children with DS take about twice as long to reach their developmental milestones as typical ones.

They also have very obvious hypotonia (floppiness).

I think it's incredibly rare for it not get picked up by 3 months at the latest, don't worry about it.

dejags · 08/02/2006 19:59

thanks geekgrrl, it's something I have secretly worried about ever since my Nuchal Fold Scan when I was pregnant - although the odds weren't terrible (500-1), I was scanned by three different people to check the nuchal fold measurement. So when I read this I felt worried.

Feel better now though and a little silly.

misdee · 08/02/2006 20:02

dd2 is still tall for her age. got asked if dd1+2 were twins again the other day by one of the nurses. (dd1 is almost 6). dd2 has hypotonia and AS traits.

OP posts:
dejags · 08/02/2006 20:07

Misdee, what's hypotonia?

Do you mind me asking what AS traits she has - feel free to ignore if too personal.

misdee · 08/02/2006 20:16

she has low muscle tone and is floppy. co-ordination/balence is awful, hence her cuts and bruises this week.

AS traits, let mer find her notebook, and i'll pop them up.
