DS has just turned 3 he has SLD and possible ASD/ADHD.

Last week at nursery he took himself off to the loo pulled his nappy down and did a wee stood at the toilet. Nursery now want me to try and train him over the holidays.

Now he can do it, i know he can, he knows when he needs to go and can hold it for ages!!. However he doesnt want to do it! he'll keep his nappy off for an hour or so and then wants in back on. At first i though maybe he needs a poo but it wasnt that, he just seems to like the security it give him, i think Confused or he just doesn't like the change. He loves his pants but wants his nappy on with them!!

Ive tried the usual rewards, and making a big fuss of him, but he just doesn't seem like gets it. His little face will lights up with the praise but then he wants his nappy back on, sort of like ok Mummy we've done this game, lets do something else Grin.

I obviously dont want to put him off for life, but i also dont want give up to early either Confused.

I would be greatful for any ideas, tips and advice. You'd think by my third DC it would be like a walk in the park!!

I think I tried to train DS2, who has ASD, too early and although weeing happened really quickly, pooing was a nightmare. In retrospect I wish I'd given up at 2.9 and tried again at 3.6 as he may have been ready then. Constant pooing in his pants became his norm and took years to sort out.

If your DS is showing signs of wanting to wee, I just went with a bare bottom and an available potty, then on to loose pants only once weeing was working, then eventually to trousers on top. He got weeing within a week with only a few accidents. Once the nappy was off he only got it on again at night. The summer may be the best time for this. I used a care mat on his car seat and buggy.
