I need some advice my 7 year old son has all the symptoms for ADHD at school and at home this has been going on for over 2 years and is now getting worse and its causing problems at home and he is very behind at school . I have been to the doctors and they have said they cant refer him it has to be through school and school are saying its a medical issue so it has to be the doctor. I cant afford to go private and dont see also why I should . Has anyone else had this situation , the doctor even admitted there may be problems but they still are saying they cant refer him . I am at my wits end and its making us all unhappy .

The school need to write a letter then if this is the case to the GP asking him to refer?

See a different GP or insist the school nurse gives you a referral to paed. We got our referral for DS2 through the school nurse, as our then-GP was less than useless. Hmm

I have never heard of this before! I think it's absolutely ridiculous. Definitely go to see another GP(as suggested) If you have concerns about your child's development, be it socially, mentally, physically, then you have every right to be referered.

I have been on the phone to family information services and they are disgusted that no one will refer me as my son talks about being dead and wishing he was never born which they have said should be a automatic referal , she has now refered me to a family and youth worker and also to CAMMS so feel so much better .

we got refered by gp to CAMHS and they declined it, and said it was more appropriate for community paeds to see for ADHD assessment. We had first appt last September then follow up end of feb. In that time school and our selves did questionnaires that were scored. We now have been told it is Adhd and further assessment will be needed to rule out dyspraxia or dyslexia. Not sure who does that bit but will get to find out. good luck!

Hi our DD 5 has ADHD and dyspraxia although we do not have an official NHS diagnosis as where we live they will not DX until the age of 7.(We did however see a private clinical ed pysch and the community paed) This however did not stop us applying for a statement and getting one along with full-time TA hours which has helped our DD in school enormously. At one point we felt we should get an official DX as we thought we needed to go down the meds route our private consultant dx ADHD and prescribed meds but I was not keen on using them. What I did though was go down the healthy eating / supplement route and it is like having a different child. At one point we thought we would have to send her to SS but not anymore she is doing fantastically well.
