following on from my last thread "help writing a letter to school", I noticed there was a "drop in" with the SENCO at school to discuss IEP's etc...so i booked an appointment for tonight.

We went in, and sat down, and the first thing she said was "I received your letter saying you have applied for SA".... ok, well thankyou for clarifing that...lol Then she said we needed to fill in a CAF.... EH? thought this was an appointment I booked...not you!!??

anyway, We went through some of the CAF, and she said that she would fill in the bits she needed to and could do without me there, and send me a copy to add bits, add them in, send me another copy to check over, then send it in.

then proceeded to show us (me and DH, the kids were accupied with lego and colouring..) a chart from a test she "is doing with all the children on IEP's"
It has two tests on it that the child completes. one is two pictures on either side of a list of words. the child has to then pick the word which best connects the two pictures E.G. a table on one side and a tree on the other....best word..."Wood" IYGWIM
The second part is a test which is like a jigsaw and has peices across the bottom of the screen, the child has to pick the right peice to fit the section of the jigsaw....IYGWIM

in the first test he scored highly, and was just about his age....the second test he scored VERY low and was 2 1/2 years behind.... but this lead to an overall score which was "88" apparently between 84 and 120 is "normal IQ"....even though it gave him an age 1 year behind.....

surely this is an indicator again of something being not right....

then at this point she asked if i had any questions etc.!
I asked her about getting the EdPsych in, which she said would happen if the SA was granted. I KNOW THAT!! DURRR!!! lol..... So i asked if the SA was refused could we still get them in. She said she would "look into it" GRRRR!! but that wasnt a NO! hahahaha

she then tried to recover the old ground of "he will catch up" "all children are different" and "he is making progress" (yes but not enough!) to which i had calm, reasoned and concise retorts!

anyway.... chase up SaLT and the Outreach report, Wait for this CAF form to add my pence-worth, and wait for the SA decision.

hate this waiting malarky!!

no need to reply, just wanted to update... :D xxx

No of course not. It was the personalities involved getting nasty when questioned/challenged.

As with all these things the premise and theory is that they really do help the family. The trouble is that rarely is that help provided on the family's terms or detached from existing provision.

It's all a mess.

Thankyou justaboutisnowakiwi for your positive experience. I do suppose its partly to do with a "postcode lottery" with how effective they are.... i will take it one step at a time and ASK as much as i can. xxx

I dont expect any referals or help to come from this, but at least its started and i will know soon enough if its a help or a hindrance lol xx
