Sensory - why does DS make constant noise?

I know that this is a sensory issue, but I would like to understand exactly why he does it??

DS has always had a problem with unexpected noise - for example, he would freak out whenever MIL laughed when he was a baby LOL! And he has always chattered away to himself all the time.

However, I think I am getting more aware of it and it's really starting to annoy me. He's nearly 8 now and has started to make 'pow pow' noises like a gun instead of chattering. Plus he's getting louder and louder, and when he's really bad he starts to repeat things people say.

Why does he do this? And what can I do to calm him down/stop being loud?
Thanks in advance x

Not a clue why or how to stop it or even slow it down at all.

DS2 is 5yo and it's nonstop. But just to let you know you're not the only one being driven mad by it. Grin

I have bought ear plugs - for him - but I think I might just keep them LOL!

DS1 once said to me that he kept talking as he didn't like the quiet. He has SPD - hypo sensitive.
Someone on here suggested an i-pod or similar - to keep him plugged into sound - in the hope that then he doesn't feel the need to make any of his own!

I might try that - thanks.

Is it possible to be both hyper and hypo sensitive? The paed thinks he finds all sounds loud (can't tell when I am shouting or not as it's all loud to him)

It seems to be possible to be hypo and hyper even for the same sense. My DS is pretty much hypo about everything, but I know of DC who can find very quiet noises distracting, and yet shout themselves. It must be a bit like having tinnitus, he needs something to drown out the irritating (to him) noises, or simply he needs to be constantly noisy to know his ears are working?

DS2 is both hypo and hyper to many different things - OT said it was fairly common.

He makes loads of noise himself, for example, but gets very upset over other noises. Grin

Ds very very loud himself. Cannot tolerate other people's noise at all. Sometimes tries to stop us talking and gets very angry if anyone else shouts or talks loudly. It is very trying.
