My ds was diagnosed with asd 3 years ago now and has just recently had a diagnosis of dyslexia Sad. I don't know much about dyslexia and wandered if it was common for the 2 to go together, anybody else's dc's have this? I don't know what I want to know just now I'm a bit shocked to be honest.

Yes, it's very common for them to exist together.

Read 'is that my child' for an explanation why.

Thankyou. I've not heard of the two together before, I just thought his lack of reading and writing skills was all due to his autism.

ASD and dyslexia are both specta or underlying disabilities. Dyslexia has three cognitive subtypes auditory, visual, and attentional, and which means that an auditory processing disorder, a visual processing disorder, an attentional disorder or can combination of the three can cause the dyslexic symptom. ASD can share one or more of these disabilities which can combine with wide range of disabilities to cause the observed ASD traits.
