the current colour way is grey and red, the older one is navy with stripes like this one which a lot of people still use, depends on condition, how much use it's had. If you're talking stripey like this one then it is old, 70's/80's according to this ad and I haven't seen any around being used but it would depend on the condition and what I wanted it for really.

I used it for my ds1 (he has Spina Bifida), and we got on with it alright. The only downside was that he couldn't sleep in it, and we couldn't afford to buy any of the extra bits - the health authority gave us just the basic buggy. We were expected to buy the rain cover and anything else that we needed. So we just gave him an umbrella when it rained!! Poor child! But it's easily manoeuvrable. He's a very tall 7 year old now though, and he wouldn't fit into it anymore.

My DS has the current grey/red one, he's had it nearly 3 years now and for the last 6 months it's been rather temperamental, waiting for a reassessment but repair technician recommended a diffferent model that are being given out more than the majors now. I think it was called Zipp, it will be on the Whizzkids website i reckon.

That one in the link ninja put up - the wheels on it look tiny compared to the current majors. May make manoeuvring harder, and make for less of a smooth stable ride? Bear in mind a special needs pushchair contains a much bigger heavier child that a buggy does!

Get your HV/GP to refer you to wheechair services. They give them to you for free if you meet the criteria.

Most of the ones on Eay are the ones peope have been given via this service.

boredandrestless · 09/03/2012 17:26

Yes yes to wheelchair services, that's how DS got his too. GP was clueless when I went in, but told me would look it up and make sure they dealt with chairs for childen with autism Hmm (I knew they did) and would call me back later in the day.

Lady at wheelchair services was really nice an understanding.

TBH yes we do get some looks and comments, but my DS has always been very big for his age. I have written in big bold letters across the front of his footplate:

NOT ALL DISABILITIES ARE VISIBLE

It seems to make people think twice and we get zero in the way of comments since doing this! I would have carried on using it though even if the comments continued as I don't drive and having the chair is an absolute godsend. Smile I have also mastered an evil stare just in case any one even thinks to be judgemental. My skin is much thicker than it used to be!

Grin Bored, what a fab idea.

DS2 is 6 now and we rarely use his Mac Major, but it oes come in handy when we are going paces I know he is likely to flip out. Plus DS3 (3) can sit on the foot plate to hitch a ride.

boredandrestless · 10/03/2012 16:46

DS's doesn't get used for trips in the local area (school, corner shop, post office), but if I go into town centre, day out, shopping, etc then I take it and he spends maybe half his time in it and half running off or hiding walking.
