Hi
I havent posted for a while. 14 year old Ds with Aspergers has enormous problems letting anyone know if he has a problem and is very good at covering his tracks. lost mobile phone , will say he left it at school, tell you where etc so it takes a while to realise its missing, Same goes for anything that means anything to him. I have discussed this with school and they insist his communication skills are good.
On another note we think his understanding of language is poor and this is impacting on his learning. School disagree. If you ask him what something means he will go. Hmm What does that mean?? As if search his brain. He actually means. Havent got a clue but will put you off the scent !!. He uses all the right phases. Told me his essays must include opinion. When I asked what opinion was he replied Hmm , What is opinion! Any thoughts or ideas gratefully recieved

It seems that his abilities are masking his difficulties.

Aspergers is primarily a social and communication disorder so for school to say he has no difficulties in these areas is simply stupid.

The difficulties Aspergers causes can be very subtle, and unless you have knowledge of how the condition generally affects people it's easy to fail to spot them. Also, children with Aspergers tend to learn by copying, without really understanding why people behave in the way they do. They just repeat learned responses.

Would it help to give the school some information on Aspergers?

I would insist on a meeting with the Ed Pysch to raise your concerns and seek their opinion.

Thanks for your reply. The school really dont seem to have a clue about ASd depite having an awful lots of kids there on the spectrum. You are right his difficultys are subtle which doesnt stop them being there. I think as well because he has less behavioural problems than many of the others his issues arent percieved to exist. I will try and get onto ed psych. Last assesment was year 5 now year 10. Unfortunatly we dont have an austim outreach team here
