I am fed up with the 'system'

dd2 problems were bought to my attention by the pre-school in nov. i contacted GP, and referred to paed. HV has referred to CDC. i know there is a long wait for things to get moving, but oh my god, i feel angry that i cant seem to access much in the way of support. My HV has left, so am waiting for new one to contact. dd2 is getting worse, she is stressing me out. its not her fault. i cant wait till i can afford a large trampoline, and get it set up, she is bouncing so hard on her little trampoline with handle bar that its twisting and tipping. i need to retighten it again.

HOw much is too much misdee? I bought mine from toysrus for £80 plus the same for the safety net. Ds1 loves it.

getbakainyourjimjams · 23/01/2006 23:08

That's a good price!

sparklymieow · 23/01/2006 23:09

i know i shouldnt moan, these things take time right? just the HV's were meant to call me by weds last week to sort out paperwork for CDC, i spoke to them at clinic on weds, they said they'll chase it up, and nothing.

I know exactly what you mean misdee. I'll let you know if I see anything cheaper than that.

Can't help on the trampoline.

IIRC, the concerns with DD2 relate to ASD? If so, this is my experience... If not, the following may be no help.

I know exactly what you mean - we 'entered' the system in Oct and don't seem to be getting far! It;s rotten. I have found the following, which may or may not help.
The education system moved faster for me than the health system - we've seen an Ed Psych who was fairly helpful. Can the preschool refer to EP? Does DD2 get any extra assistance at preschool?

Also I insisted on a separate SALT referal in addition to the CDC referal, and an initial SALT appt has come through already, while the CDC isn't due till April. Can you try that?

I find it helps my sanity if I know when appts are likely to come up. Call the CDC, ask to confirm that they have received the referal and ask if they can advise roughly when you'll hear about the appt and when it's likely to be. Round here the responses are typically something like "we send out the next bunch of appts in March for the following two months" or "there's currently a 6mo waiting time between referal and appt". I find it helps me just to know how long.

We have a local "opportunity group" who have various drop-in, specialist and nursery / preschool sessions including SALT. They were frinedly, helpful and welcoming. Do you have anything like this?

I find that so far, I have to scratch together tips and info from any professional I come across, rather than having specific input for me.

Probably no use at all, but is there a local toy library who could rent you a trampoline?

misdee · 24/01/2006 10:06

yes ASD. not sure if she needs SALT, i can understand her. pre-school are not giving anything away, havent suggested coping methods or anything. just really unsure what to do. do i approuch them again and ask how she is doing? any more concerns? what is being done? the SN teacher said that she wants dd2 seen by paed then they can send in Ed Physc to assess and other things. am i being fobbed off? what order should it be in?

GP has just perscribed another bottle of vallergen, god i need the sleep.

I know that when ds1 and ds2 were first referred to see the Paed at the CDC both boys were observed at pre-school and at home before the Paed appointment. I think it was the Early Years Inclusion Service people who observed them. They picked up on things that even I hadn't noticed and I think it gave the Paed a fuller picture of what was happening.

There was no involvement at all from the Ed.Psych at that stage but the pre-school isn't attached to a school so maybe that's why?

misdee · 24/01/2006 10:29

i guess.

its so hard isnt it? thrown in at the deep end.

I thought I had it all straight in my head after going through it all with ds1. Then it was ds2's turn and everything is in a completely different order again. I sometimes think they just make up the 'correct' procedures as they go along.

misdee · 24/01/2006 10:37

probably coppertop.

there has been mass outcry since HV left. he was really good, and loads of families are upset with him leaving. why do the good ones leave?

i'm gonna call the HV team in a bit. theyare at clinic atm.

It's alot to take in MIsdee, my head was all over the place when my ds was first diagnosed with ASD. My ds first saw his Ed Psych when he was diagnosing him as part of the multi disciplinary team, we hadn't had contact with him before. My ds's pre school who suspected ASD, called in an area SENCO, who then referred him onto the SALT. This got the ball rolling to start the multi disciplianry procedure to get his diagnosis. What a palava! (sp?)

Know what you mean , I'm trying to track down OT privately for ds as he'll have to wait until the end of the year to be assessed on NHS. The community ones don't take private work but have given me a web address which now can't find

misdee · 24/01/2006 13:20

HV couldnt get hold of me as they didnt have my current address anjd phone number apparently. they had my address from 4years ago! dd2 has never even lived at that address. anyway, HV will be round tomorrow afternoon.

SqueakyCat · 24/01/2006 14:55
