DLA/Carer's allowance

We were finally awarded DLA for DS1 yesterday.

I am at college part time, DH is a full time Chef. I'm at college doing an access course, and am going to uni in September which will be full time.

DS1 is 5 and at school 9-12pm only, as he's not coping well with F/T school. I'm doing Midwifery so the hours will be different and DH needs to be home with DS to care for him.

Anyway, we're having to apply for carer's allowance and income support to help financially. We can't apply for any change in circumstance until he's actually stopped working, and it's terrifying!

Carers is pretty quick to be done.

Thank you, he's given his notice in today so will be applying when he's finished. Very scary.

CA is really quick 2 weeks max.

Do they back date CA and if so, do you know by how much? Thanks

Backdate CA to day you applied for DLA (unless you were working then). Can earn £100 per week + tax+ NI + childcare and still get carers so OP could claim backdated CA for her and then swap it to DH (check you can get carers and study, I am fairly sure you can).

Also tell tax credits when get CA. They add it to your income but you get extra tax credits (until the Govt axe them anyway)
