Help Mencap inform government policy on learning disability

Hello there

You might already know that the goverment is currently consulting disabled people and their carers on how 'to tackle barriers to realising aspirations and individual control, as well as change attitudes and behaviour towards disabled people'.

If you have a child with a learning disability, Mencap would love to hear from you. They're gathering the opinions of people with learning disabilities and those who care for them on what really needs to change, and will feed them into the consultation. Their survey is here, if you've got a few minutes to fill it out.

That's not it, shrek - the second link leads to a survey for people with a learning disability, which on the first page tells parents and carers to fill out a different survey. Only problem is, I cannot find that survey, anywhere (not can i find links to the original one on the mencap site - they need to make it a lot easier to find if they want responses, i think)

We've now amended it.

Filled in - although the survey seemed weighted towards much more able children/people with learning difficulties than my ds.

Gosh agree eggandcress- rather weighted towards inclusion as well.

Totally agree with eggandcress and saintly my 2 DC's are unsuitable for inclusion.

Those questions can not be answered with just one of thier standard options, it's impossible.

Click on something else and explain that all of the answers they included are valid and apply to the question.

That survey to be honest has pissed me off.

Yes, the agenda is already set before you start the survey. MENCAP should be aware that noone is against inclusion, some of us just find we can't access mainstream society without great difficulty.

I have emailed Mencap to explain the survey did not cover the needs of my ds and like him

Yep bakelitebelle. For ds1 'inclusion' often means exclusion - to be able to take part he needs a different environment.

It was hard to make that point on the survey.

Anyone else find this ironic in light of their recent proposed cuts to disability benefits that the government now wants to get input from the disabled? Will they even listen? They didn't listen in regards to the cuts....

Agree about the weighting - wanted to answer for DS2, but ended up answering for DS1.

molepom - I did just that for one of the questions and considered it for a couple of others.

For the one thing the government can do question - I did chose the other option and said that it totally depends on the person, their disability and their background and the government should ensure that disabled people were given what they, themselves need.

Well, that was aggravating. Not very easy to make answers clear and it's never just ONE thing that seems to stop DS2 from doing something in particular, it's generally a combination of things, however, they only let you choose one.

Also agree with triggles having just completed it. Found myself saying "something else" a lot and writing it is a combination of factors all equally important.

After reading the above comments I shan't bother doing it! My boys are incredibly complex and SLD so doesn't sound like it meets their criteria.

Not overly impressed with Mencap anyway (Did work for them for a time), find they are more geared towards adults than kids...
