Hi. Chances are if you've opened this thread, you may have followed us from here I thought the new year needed a new thread (also the old one was nearly full!)

The basics: Beatrice has central arthrogryposis and extensive cortical dysplasia. She is 16 weeks old and weighs 8lb 1oz. She is on continuous oxygen at 0.2 litres. She is fed Infatrini with Duocal mixed in via NG tube. She is undergoing ponsetti treatment for her talipes, she also has splints for her hands and is now in a pavlik harness full time for her shallow hip sockets. She is coping very well with all of her treatments. Smile Her community children's nurse describes her as 'defying all the odds'.

The positives: If you have a 4 month old NT baby, the following will probably seem pretty poor progress, but for Beatrice who was stiff and non responsive at bith, she has made great gains. Smile Bea seems very alert in this last week and is becoming more vocal too! She happily shouts at me when something isn't going her way- a vast improvement as she couldn't even cry when born. She moves her arms in all directions now and manages to lift her legs, even with the cast and harness. When she is under her play gym with lights, she moves her arms and legs in appreciation. She also mouths when she is hungry. Her breathing pattern seems much more regular since being on oxygen. She not only recognises my voice and turns to find me, but she can also distinguish other people talking and will move her head in different directions to find who is talking. We assume her eyesight is very poor, although we know she can see shadows and bright lights when it is dark. She adores the cinema and has been twice now!

The downers: Her weight gain is painfully slow- on average 2oz per week. She has fallen off the growth charts completely. She is still sick a couple of times a day. She is having a barium meal and swallow study on Monday to see if there is anything going on. Her sats are irregular and heartrate is very high, so weaning her off oxygen (which she started when she had pneumonia before Christmas) hasn't started yet.

Support: Beatrice was finally awarded DLA at the highest rate today, and we have been told to apply for a blue badge as parking in tight spaces with her oxygen is somewhat problematic Hmm. Next week, our lovely physiotherapist who has been administering the weekly plaster casts is going to start coming to our house to do some massage and play and encourage her arm movements even more. The referral to Helen House Hospice is still being processed. After Bea's casts have come off permanently (just 2 more to go!!) I plan on taking her swimming at the hydrotherapy pool in the special school where my SIL works as a SLT.

At the end of January we have a review with our 'lovely' paediatric consultant, Dr Scrooge. We havent managed to shake her off yet!

Thanks for following us here- I'll add some more pictures in a minute. Smile

Aah a little puff! Hopefully she'll be off that before too long.

Mind you DD2 got down to 0.05 and stayed there for ages, it was very frustrating! It was as if she just needed a tiny puff to keep her topped up, with her low tone and floppiness she just couldn't take a deep enough breath in to maintain good sats. As she got bigger and stronger she could, and when we came off the oxygen I did a (nervous) little happy dance. So good not to have to lug all that around!

CestTout · 23/01/2012 12:32

So pleased to hear you have had a super weekend and also to hear how well Bea is doing.

Fingers crossed that Bea continues her high stats (except the 81%) and gets off that oxygen.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 23/01/2012 12:53

Happy (belated) Birthday!! 30?? Lucky girl, you still look like a teenager!! :)

I hope the consultant thinks Bea will be OK off of the oxygen. If the only blip was when she was sick I'd be surprised if it makes any difference. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 23/01/2012 12:59

whatevertheweather Congratulations!! That's lovely news.

Four4me · 23/01/2012 18:39

Hi, Just popping in to see how your little beauty is doing. I am so sorry that you have had to fight for treatment, unfortunately it is endemic in the health service and it really shouldnt be, its mainly down to disorganisation.

There are some wonderful comments on this thread.

A belated happy birthday to you.

KateUnrulyBush · 24/01/2012 18:46

Oh goodness I've missed so much! Cup, I lost you from the previous thread (my fault, sorry!) and I've namechanged for the new year (I always do) so just explaining myself for appearing as-if-from-nowhere.

On the plus side, it's great to have so many updates in one go, it sounds as though things are going well and you are being an amazing warrior-mum still :)

So, a belated happy new year to The Teaset and a happy birthday to you!

I'm off to look at the new piccies now :)

saffronwblue · 25/01/2012 08:49

Thanks to Bob for being a huge support at the other end of the phone, and thanks for updating MN for me.

Basically, I took Bea to the GP surgery this afternoon for a routine check to listen to her chest, simply because she'd not long finished a course of antibiotics for a chest infection and I wanted to check it was clear. Whilst the GP was listening to her chest, Bea stopped breathing for 10 seconds. The GP called for o2 and the nurse called 999. Everyone was fairly calm, then Bea did it again. And 2 more times. I kept shaking her to make her breathe and willing her to pull through. I was telling her how I love her to the moon and back, and one of the 2 nurses began to cry Sad

By now it was 20 minutes since an ambulance had been called for so the nurse went to chase it up and came back in a panic saying they hadn't sent one. The Gp raced off to check and came back crying and shaking. I think she was in shock. She grabbed her keys and marched Bea, the oxygen, a nurse and I to her own car, where she proceeded to drive at speed to the hospital.

She kept apologising for everything, but her quick actions saved Bea I'm sure. By this time, I'd rung dh to leave work and get to the children's ward, and rung dsis to collect girls. Dh rang me from the children's wars and because the ambulance hadn't come, we were told to go straight to a&e for resuscitation.

In a&e, they put Bea on 9 litres of o2 and her Sats and heartrate stabilised. The GP and nurse waited until dh arrived before returning to her waiting patients! After a while, Bea was transferred to HDU in the childrens ward and we are here now. She's down to 0.2 o2 which is usually on at home and her sats ate 98%.

I can't believe that 2 CCNs saw Bea at home today and we all commented on how stable and steady her breathing was. I can't believe how quickly she became ill.

They are guessing it's bronchiolitus or aspiration pneumonia again so on my insistence they have put her on oral antibiotics. I'm proud of Bea, and proud of myself for staying calm and in control when everyone else around me was panicking. I can't tell you how much I love and adore my beautiful girl, please keep her in your prayers.

I am glad she is ok and at home again now Cupoftea. I can't even imagine how scared you must have been. I've just cried reading it myself.
big yay for the GP driving you to hospital herself though!

BB3 · 25/01/2012 22:17

Oh cup, what a truly horrible experience! Well done on staying so calm and thank goodness for you and the dr acting so quickly. Your posts and your unquestionable love for that little girl has bought many a tear to my eyes. Never more so than today.

Bea has an entire army of mn mums willing her better and I hope she continues to get better and returns home soon.

Seeing all our love xxx

mummynoseynora · 25/01/2012 22:18

LittlePebble · 25/01/2012 22:19

Wow cup what a day. Bea is such a fighter and it sounds like she gets it from you. So glad the GP took action but I'm shocked that the ambulance didn't get sent can you find out why? Will have Bea in my thoughts and prayers tonight hoping she gets home again soon xx

Bluetinkerbell · 25/01/2012 22:19

youarekidding · 25/01/2012 22:20
