SN children

Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Any other families in North London that might like to meet?

Since having Ds1(6,asd) i have become increasingly isolated, partly because of how hard it is to get out with him but mostly how busy and exhausted I get with it all. I now have Ds2 (2) and DD1 (1) and most of the holidays are spent at home and mostly indoors due to Ds1 love of eating mud. Weekends we try to get out as much as possible especially in summer and mostly its fine when there are two of us. Ds2 needs to socialise more it would be good if he could find other children to relate to. I wondered if there are any families near here, with similar family set up (parents of children with sn, similar age children), who would maybe like to meet.

Im in Herts and have 2 girls with ASD. We belong to a social group for girls with ASD, but happy to pass of further information about another group. Also we meet with a mixed group, weekly for horse riding therapy (siblings welcome too)

We take ds to RDA but the others in Ds group are much older teenagers with no/ much older siblings. We are Barnet by the way.

It's not RDA it's more of the therapy side. It's in essondon

Could you put some more info about the risky group as I had a look on google and couldn't find anything but would really like to know more.

singlevillagemum · 31/12/2011 08:58

Riding - not risky! My phone obviously has different views on what will suit DS.

That looks good. How does it work exactly? Do they have a waiting list?

No waiting list. You ring and book a session, thats good for you. You then go and spend time there, building relationship with horse of your choosing. You then spend time grooming, help care for horse and get 30 mins riding in the woods and country side.
There is a machine horse to get used to what a horse feels like and activties too.
There is no pressure to do anything you dont want, take as much time as you like (we spend 2-3 hours there) and if your child requires the same horse every week, just say so. Its very relaxed, with plenty of space.

There is a lovely group I sometimes go to in St James Church in Muswell Hill called Challenge Group on Fridays 10:00-11:30 (not this week though) I guess your eldest is in school at that time but there are others parents who attent on their own or with younger siblings anyway as its a great way to chat with other parents. They also have a lady who gives 5-10 massage as well as lovely home made cakes and fresh coffee.

Lisa thanks so much for the info re horse-riding, I have been looking for ages for somewhere that would take my DS2 who is only 21 months. They said yes and we are going on Saturday - so excited!!
Staryeyed, I am in North London, I have DS1 who is 5 and DS2, aged 21 months, who has a genetic syndrome. Happy to meet for a coffee. PM me. Have you come across IPOP yet?

they don't have much for younger children but might have something suitable for your 6 year old.

lisad123 · 05/01/2012 14:07

might see you there Wink

Sorry to hyjack

Is there anything like ipop in Haringey? I really need some additional support for ds in the activities ds does after school (at school) and it is really frustrating as they only help Barnet residents. I had the same problem when I tried to get help from Portage. Sorry for the rant.
