hi.
im thinking of getting ds assessed privately,
(hes adhd, but we think theres more going on,poss aspergers)
pead has said theres no aspergers, but between myself and school,we think there may be.

do you still have to go threw your dr to go private?
and does anyone know about what it may cost?
and is it done in several sessions,or just one?

You can go to a private Ed psych by booking an appt - it is nothing to do with a gp.
But you will need to find a decent one so research it.
I went via a speech centre in Euston. Can remember how much it cost. He saw ds2 three or four times. Probably cost a few hundred pounds from memory. But it will vary

I think you should go to a private paed not a private EP (from your other threads)

You don't go through your DR. But you have the hard task of choosing one (and then paying for it :) )

thank you indigo,
would a private pead go to the school?would they then recommend an ed psych?etc?
yes the cost is going to be high, but we will just tighten our belts and no holiday next year to get this all sorted,x

I think you normally see a private paed in their offices.

For ASD you don't need to be seen by and EP. In fact EPs are only qualified to dx dyslexia.

Where in the country do you live? - somebody might be able to give you some recommendations if you give us a vague area.

Yes it's a paediatrician who would diagnose asd. Daphne Keen does private dx, but I think she's in London (do-able from Norfolk I guess?). I don't know of any in your area but bumping again for you.

Pagwatch · 06/12/2011 17:19

Ok. I need to stop posting on here.
The guy who told me ds2 had asd and gave me some help when no one else would listen was an Ed psych. But that was 13 years ago now and that is obviously out of date.
I will stick to the teen board

bialystockandbloom · 06/12/2011 18:06

Just meant that afaik an EP cannot officially dx! I am sure that a good EP will certainly be able to recognise asd, but not sure they can officially diagnose. Might be wrong though.

we are all set for private assessment this thurs i am nervous as hell. Not a paed though pyschologist but we do have supporting reports from comm paed. will let you know how we get on if you interested.

We have just had DS1 privately diagnosed with ADHD and Autism this summer. It has been v v v expensive but woth every single penny. It is ongoing. we need to keep going every three months for a while until meds are sorted keep an eye on things.

Initial diagnosis took about 4 or 5 meetings an hour and a half long then report was issued with diagnosis. Thereafter hourly meetings to deal with medicines and check ups to maintain situation. So far has cost us about the same as a term at a good private school.

Well worth investigating The Priory, they have surgeries all over the place, and it's not all about rehab! We have had to go to North London. The consultant we saw works from there and is one of the country's leading ADHD specialists and is extremely good. He aslo deals with Autism and developmental behaviours.

Chundle · 07/12/2011 14:14

Sorry to jump this thread but saw sponkle mention the Priory. Does the priory only deal with older kids or do they deal with preschool age children as well? Just in case we decide to go private next year. Thank you

sponkle · 09/12/2011 10:19

I think they deal with all children and young adults. Ring up and ask, I have found them to be extremely helpful.

Chundle · 09/12/2011 18:56
