Just heard from school ds is the inn keeper in the nativity play... Grin He has been shouting "NO ROOM HERE!!!!" at the top of his voice Grin.

well the instruction did say 'a loud clear voice' LOL Grin

Of course at the time he may say something completely random like 'i love my red ds', but he is there and he has a speaking part... I thought he would be a sheep or an angel, so he could wander off if he wanted... but I think they have really thought about this, because the inkeeper comes on, says his bit and then can go. (and it is only reception so it won't be too busy.. Hmm ).

Never thought I would get to see this... Grin we will wait and see what happens..... Hmm.

Well done, great he's got a speaking part. Ds is a sheep here. We've been told to stick cotton wool balls to a t-shirt. I can just imagine sheep wool all over the fall and DS there in a white t-shirt. Grin

It's reception here too and the whole of nursery are sheep as well, it's going to be chaos. :)

I'm quite looking forward to it.

chuckeyegg · 21/11/2011 08:13

(floor not fall) although there will probably be some falling too with all the cotton wool balls. :)

intothewest · 21/11/2011 08:33

Grin sounds like it will be fun !

TheNinjaGooseIsOnAMission · 21/11/2011 09:08

oh fantastic Smile It's only reception, the first school nativity, the world and their whole extended family will be there to oooh and aaah Grin

chucky, I'm afraid I would be cheating and getting the asda sheep costume Grin Nursery were always stars at my dcs primary, for at least the last 8 years they've sung twinkle twinkle christmas star!

I'm looking forward to dd3's christmas play, how they're going to work the mostly nonverbal nursery and reception into it is going to be interesting Grin I may have to ask today when I see the teacher.

signandsmile · 21/11/2011 18:57

i am expecting inn keeper complete with luminous green ear defenders, btw. Grin

coff33pot · 21/11/2011 19:14

sign ear defenders will be ok those donkeys dont half make a noise Grin

Well done on the speaking part! :)

beingarebel · 21/11/2011 19:32

My ds is a non speaking mouse and is going to hide behind his costume that he has every faith that I'm going to magic out of thin air. I think it was a well thought out role, he squeaks all the time Grin.

Ineedalife · 21/11/2011 19:35

Aaahhh bless him and a school play wouldn't be right without something unpredictable happening Sign.

I hope he enjoys itSmile.

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 21/11/2011 19:54

Lovely, lovely, lovely. Smile You can't have too many Wriggly Nativities. At one memorable Nativity at DS's special school, Mary decked Joseph!

TheTimeTravellersWife · 21/11/2011 21:10

Congratulations! Sounds like the ideal part!
DD has a line to say in the school play this year, first time ever! She can't read, so we are reading through the script with her. Very proud! Not sure she how she will manage, but I am sure that it will be "alright on the night"! I hope that her LSA will be there, to prompt her, if necessary, although it is in the evening, so I'm not sure...

auntevil · 21/11/2011 21:50

Well done to signlet. IMO, its the unexpected that make the show Grin

AgnesDiPesto · 22/11/2011 22:55

DS is a shepherd
He is the only child in the class who has already learnt all the songs
But he won't sing when everyone else is singing
Nothing for it, they will have to give him a solo Grin

signandsmile · 23/11/2011 07:31

latest news from the practices... ds will say his line (hurrah), but only if he is looking over his shoulder at the CD player, so he can still see the numbers for which song is next. Hmm Grin.

I am also thinking if he sees me at school then there will be a huge fuss and fight for him to get to me, as it must be home time IYSWIM. I am thinking I might need to have him sit with me and then take him up to do his line??? will check with the TA....

Well done to all of the little stars with their parts.

Ds asked to be in the choir as they stay at the side and don't go onto the stage, He hates all of the eyes looking at him if he is on the stage. He's been the same since nursery! I've got instructions not to look at him or give hi any attention afterwards. :)

He also wishes that the Christmas production were on the 6th January - ie when we will be away on holiday so he doesn't have to do it! Grin

Chundle · 23/11/2011 10:36

Aww that's fab news!!! Bet he will be fab! My dd is a Roman soldier and is demanding to know why she can't take in a real sword for the play!

Sleepdeprevation · 23/11/2011 20:11

Sorry to bring the thread down - some idiot bright spark, decided that my ds would be an angel. The only boy angel, the only year 2 angel, surrounded by 9 reception girl angels, and gave him a white dress not sheet dress to wear.

He has been worrying about the play since September, he hasn't even been able to perform in the plays for the last two years due to severe anxiety. The liklihood of him performing is slim. But rather than giving him an inncuous part, they have given him a part that not only has caused him distress, he is not a baby he is not a girl and he is not wearing a dress. But has given fantastic ammunition to all his classmates to take the mick. Oh the chants I've heard are very witty.

Angry Sad

elliejjtiny · 23/11/2011 20:29

Oh sleepdeprevation that's awful. What are the rest of his class doing? Surely they could have come up with a part more appropriate for him.

signandsmile · 23/11/2011 20:34

sleep really sorryto hear that Sad.

I started the thread not cos I was fussed about whether he had a good part, (don't really mind), but that he had a part that suited him.... one he could manage on his own terms, and yet still be included with everyone. What your ds's school seems to have done is the exact opposite, Sad Angry.

Can you provide more a masculine costume? Would it encourage him to know that the main angels in the bible (seem to be) male? Could he be Gabriel?

Altho if he wants to avoid attention that won't help.... Sad

No I know sign and I am delighted that your school have obviously thought about it, and given him a part that includes him, and will allow him his glory moment which is fantastic.

The rest of his class are individual roles e.g. Joseph, Mary, Boy, Girl, Inn Keeper, 3 Kings etc. All animals, shepherds, chorus roles (which if he wasn't dressed as a girl would have been perfect for ds) are being done by Rec and Yr1 pupils.

There are 10 shepherds (year 1 boys) who are all sat no speaking, just watching and singing all the songs, with everyone else. I asked if he could be one of these (what difference does it make if there's 10 shepherds or 11, esp if unlikely he'll even be there) The response was no it will make things uneven, well it will be now if ds doesn't attend!

We chatted about the angels in the bible being male, he wasn't convinced that we weren't just feeding him a line. I suggested different costume, got told he had to "look" like the other angels Hmm.

Anyway one more week, then it's all over forever, as this is his last ever nativity play.

Triggles · 23/11/2011 21:08

Sleep - Sorry, but I would tell them that what they are doing is deliberately setting him up to be different and ridiculed by his classmates. Surely that is against school policies of some sort? Would they do that to any other boy in his year? (I doubt it!!)

DS2 was in the chorus in his reception year nativity last year - and spent half the time outside the room with his TA as he was too overwhelmed by all the people and the other half sitting on her lap, listening to the other children sing. This year the Yr1 and Yr2 are doing a carol concert during the school day, so either he'll sing with the group or he won't. Grin it just remains to be seen which he'll choose on the day.

Tiggles · 23/11/2011 21:22

Sleep - that is really sad. DS always wanted to be an angel - he was dead chuffed that the churches we go to let him be an angel. Not sure it is of much use to your DS but my favourite ever Christmas play I went to the lead part was the angel gabriel - an 18 year old male rapping teenager.

Lovely to hear about all our DC getting roles. DS1 is Joseph this year. He has to sing a duet with Mary and a short solo. Amazing really, and hope he can do it, as his past history before a year ago was to stand on the stage and cry, if he got on the stage at all...

DS2 is a narrator as he has the biggest and loudest voice in reception Grin. That along with his echolaic way of remembering loads of lines really easily...

sphil · 23/11/2011 21:58

Last year DS2 was a star - he spent all his time with his back to the audience asking his 1:1 (who was standing behind him) to tickle him. The year before he was the non-speaking husband of the innkeeper, who was supposed to keep hold of his hand but didn't, thus allowing him free range of the stage. The Incredible Escaping Innkeeper has gone down in school history...

DS1 is auditioning for his play tomorrow - singing the Knights Song from Horrible Histories with his friend. Hopefully this will mean he gets a better part than last year, when he was a shoe Hmm

tallwivglasses · 24/11/2011 00:07

Jeez, Sleep, the more I hear about the utter insensitivity towards ASD children in mainstream, the more I'm grateful DS is in a special school. Please complain.

Sign, I'm delighted for your DS. I remember seeing a young Innkeeper who froze, staring out into the audience, bottom lip quivering...until his dad stood up and waved from the back - Innkeeper grinned and almost seemed to relish the fact that he had to tell M, J and the donkey there was NO ROOM IN THE INN!

tallwivglasses · 24/11/2011 00:10

sphil, a SHOE? I feel Ds's pain. I was cast as a Goose-a-laying once Blush

theDudesmummy · 24/11/2011 11:44

My (non speaking, probable ASD traits) two year old has been cast as an angel, so the audience is going to be likely to be treated to the interesting spectacle of an angel standing on his head throughout (what he does when he is not sure what to do). I have got him some nice wings for his back so that the view will be interesting at least.
