There are two schools of thought on this - I mentioned ABA upfront, right from the request for a statutory assessment for a statement. I laid out all the evidence that it was working, and all the evidence that TEACCH had not.rned out that convincing the LA Ed Psych that ABA was "uniquely suitable for DS's particular special educational needs" was more than 80% of the battle, as the LA put total faith in what their EP recommends. I therefore spent a LOT of time and work convincing her - including home visits to witness ABA sessions, ending her videos of his progress and even (in one memorable meeting) insisting she watched 15 minutes of footage on my mobile phone of DS doing a jigsaw, which she'd doubted he had the ability to do. I think - in the end - she gave me ABA just to ensure she never had to see or hear from me again! It was a charm offensive of intense proportions!

At the same time, I laid out evidence that my DS was severe enough to get a statement - various letters from paediatricians and two diagnoses of ASD, letters from therapists, nursery etc. So you are effectively fighting on two fronts at the same time.

But a pal of mine did the thing in two stages - a) secure the statement, by proving the seriousness of his condition and b) fight the ABA battle.

Do you have any info at all about whether your LA is pro or anti ABA - what am I saying, of course they're anti, but perhaps they are less or more anti-ABA than most iyswim?

sorry - typos . It turned out that convincing the EP of the effectiveness of ABA was more than 80% of the battle .

thank u sickofsocalledexperts .... i think we will be going with your way of upfront about ABA my preschool support worker came to ABA workshop, they know about it... but thats different than the LA! which of course will be against! all new to me this as ABA programme only started july....
hpe you don't mind me picking your brain but what sort of info do i nee to put in the parental request on why he needs an assessment...is it a case of more info the better or keep it brief? do i add the letters from peads etc as you say with the parental request or is that for further down the line...sorry i get so confused and it's all like another language...just getting used to the tacts intraverbals, mands, conditioning reinforcers language now its LA ep etc.... thanks so much for your help i'm drowning in confusion! thanks again x

I have found these views v interesting. We secured a statemenbt for our ds when he was at nursery at 3 and NONE of the professionals from NHS or educational system mentioned aba. As our ds hasn't been diagnosed yet I didn't get the info about ABA until recently when it dawnned on me the seriousness of his situation. He's staryed ft education with 32hrs support and its going slowly. Well try aba for the next few months and may the LEA fight commence! X
