Posted this in the In The News section as wanted to bring it to the attention of non-SN audience. But please have a look and get it bumped - Daily Mail's leading front page story today (saw in newsagent) on 'disablity cheats' and I couldn't see any mention of it anywhere on MN.

Hateful, hateful stuff.

I've seen it and I commented last night on the DM website. Something along the lines of vicious, hateful reporting again and it wasn't displayed. I will have a look at your link and bump it. Some of the comments on the website now seem to be quite negative towards the DM for the article, but predictably most of them are bashing disability. It is hate speech and as such, the DM should be made to cease reporting (in an ideal world!), but it's sensationalist approach appeals to too many people who are too lazy, unwilling, or incapable of thinking independently Angry

Yes the business about ONLY having to fill in a form to get DLA! ONLY? That f*cker is thirty pages long and if took me over two months to complete it!

I feel real fear for disabled people and CHILDREN in this country and no one seems to care Sad. Life feels very unstable and cold under this government.

Life feels very unstable and cold under this government.

I feel exactly that too Sad

It's so hurtful and maddening too that after claiming DLA, which is an almighty battle that it's reduced to 'just filling in a form'. Someone made a remark on the DM's comments page that being awarded DLA is like winning the lottery. Sick. NO amount of money is ever going to be able to compensate for having sick or disabled children, or suffering from such illnesses or problems oneself Angry

bialystockandbloom · 11/11/2011 21:19

yy, that's the thing isn't it. It's as if any support given to families is somehow a bonus gift of kindness. FFS having a disability is a shit deal in life. All DLA does is go some small way in providing what a person with disabilities needs to survive.

Hate the attitude (as seen in the other thread) of "well I don't get any "handouts" and I have to struggle through" .

Yes but you don't have a disability to cope with as well!!

Hi- Saw that headline when in a shop earlier- Picked up the paper and ranted to my friend(oh and I think that some other people MAY have heard me.) Don't know why it took me weeks to fill out the'form' then.....

feirless · 13/11/2011 07:15

i hate those who moan about having to struggle too...
i still have to struggle, just not as much with money now!

i do think the media should get prosecuted when they promote hate though, these articles are just rubbish, full of false 'facts' and often contradict themselves too.
seems a pretty bad country when ppl can make news writing hate stories that other ppl will buy because they like hating.

Do we, or do we not, live in a civilised society? Do we look after those less fortunate than ourselves?

Genuine disability is a struggle. Day in day out.

I know there are benefit cheats. They must be stopped. But, real disability is entirely different. I look at my ds and I'd give every penny of his DLA back if he could be "normal". Every single thing he receives is due to him and we've had to fight each step of the way and justify each request over and over again. Just a matter of filling in a form? Fucking Daily Mail...... Maybe we should just euthanise the disabled? Would that be easier? Put them in institutions? Have them begging in the streets?

2old2beamum · 13/11/2011 15:05

I am so angry with the fucking Daily Fail. They perhaps should walk in our shoes. I have 5 disabled people living with me and Pa (all adopted) 3 DS 1 cp
and 1 Emmanuel Syndrome age 31 to 6 years, we are now oap's. I dread to think how much my lovely DCs would cost if we didn't have them here with us. DS CP cost £5000/ week in residential care in 2004. Give us that a week and all Daily Fail readers and David Cameron could stuff DLA and ESA up where the sun doesn't shine. I wonder what would happen if we all decided to relinquish our lovely children into care we would bring this country to its knees. We wouldn't because we love our children too much and unfortunately they know this.

unpa1dcar3r · 13/11/2011 15:34

Hey guys
The only reason the Daily fail keep banging on about benefits for disabled is cos the paper is run by Tory's and Cameron wants to turn us all into social deviants to justify the looming benefit cuts. That's it.
This is the 3rd story in as many weeks it has run along the same lines.

Folk Devils is what they're trying to turn us into; unacceptable within the 'norms' of society which is good at promoting informal sanctions as to what is acceptable behaviour and what isn't. Hence at the moment us lot are being demonised to turn society against us as being not the 'norm' and a threat to the running of a smooth society.

The people who decide and print these stores don't believe them anymore than we do, but it makes good politics, makes them look like they've done their job, cracking down on a minority group who are in reality neither threat nor encumbrance to the smooth running of society, by turning the readers against us further; to make them doubt the minority group and applaud the govt for bringing it to their attention.

Then when it all goes through with the cuts everyone (who hasn't got the brains they were born with to see beyond their little box of info) will go "Jolly good work old chaps, ridding us of those pesky scroungers, Bravo"

Then in a week or a month another group will be in our boat. Could be lone parents, gays, Muslims; you name it, it'll be there at some point.

Of course anyone who can actually see beyond their agenda will know that it is actually society's failings as a whole which create these situations but they're not gonna admit that are they.

How many stories do we get about tax evasion from the upper classes?????
Never and none.
Think about it!

Well said unpa1dcar3r.

I'd give up dla in a heartbeat if I could find out for certain that my son will be able to live an independant life & won't ever be subject to any bullying because of his autism.
