Hi there, ds age 4 with sli (handful of single words only) and development delay and currently in dual placement of development centre/ms school, I would just like to know if anyone has tried phonics and what is the best way to teach him, his salt says to wait but I would like to give it a try so any ideas would be apprieciated, thanks

To be honest I would wait if the salt has said that - I know it's hard but you may end up confusing him more. My DS 4 was non verbal a year ago and now has quite a few words and his vocabulary (if not his understanding) is growing daily. DS attends a SS with on site SALT - we are currently starting to introduce PECS but it is being done simultaneously at home an in school with the same symbols / pictures to ensure continuity. Unless you have good reason to doubt the SALT I would go with what they recommend.

I would agree with cwtch, as your ds is delayed it is unlikely he will cope with different styles of teaching and he may actually regress. ds2 is 5 and in y1 in ss, his speech has come on massively since he started at christmas, he too uses PECS and sign a long.

Have you researched verbal behaviour method? Might be of use.
