As I have been trying to set up a home programme for DS, I went a bit mental recently and bought a lot of things from different roads to learning (Ds is still in the SN school and still trying to find him a MN school). I have got all the question sets, conversation starter sets and it's time for school book which I am loving reading as it is full of ideas as to how to include ABA in mainstream school. However, I am struggling with VB Mapp. I don't understand the language, it's like reading something in another language to me. Any explanation to make it easier?

There are two books. One with the curriculum/assessment and the other to explain it. Do you have both?

I did not realise there are two books. The one I got says "the VB Mapp set-the milestone assessment and placement programme".

It basically comes in two components - the assessment book itself (the one with all the grids, questions etc) and then the instructions to accompany it.

Tbh unless you know ABA terminology it would be pretty hard for you to do it. Even the instruction book itself is still aimed at the professional. Robert Schramm's Educate Towards Recovery (about VB) has a useful glossary of terminology, but still would be tough for the layman to do. Do you have a supervisor or tutors? We got one of our tutors to do it at the start of the programme.

It's not actually essential for a programme that you do it - but is useful to get a really good, in-depth measure of what the gaps are.

Yes, we have a supervisor. I will ask her to do it then. Good to know that I am not being stupid. I got it because I have been feeling that our ABA provider is not taking into account any of our concerns (having very little chooice we are stuck with them), so I wanted to have an understanding of what they should be doing with DS now.

The manual that comes with the assessment is very good. I understand most of it from looking at it for an hour today, it's quite clear.

Where do you buy it from in the Uk? Can you borrow it from NHS salt?

MangoMonster · 31/10/2011 19:50

I think you have to get it from the US. I got mine from www.difflearn.com

You can see parts of the VB Mapp free online at

www.avbpress.com/vb-mapp.html

Also from ABVpress website (also US) here

The link is for both booklets, the assessment itself and the guide.
