Daily Fail at it again with free cars for hyperkids BS

Crackdown on £35,000 cars for the disabled,
Tough new rules will end the scandal of disabled people getting taxpayer funded luxury cars worth up to £37,000.
The changes follow concerns over the abuse of the scheme which has seen the parents of hyperactive children getting free cars.
blah blah blah

There must be a way of stopping this clap trap being printed, surely.

Hmm. Nice to see the disabled-bashers (dm)are at it again.

sheepgomeep · 24/10/2011 22:16

They also made it seem like every child with ADHD gets a free car. They don't. I don't get a free car for ds. He gets middle rate care and lower rate mobility. The daily mail omitted to mention the different rates of care/ mobility and just lumped every claiment together as one.

Even my mother who is a staunch daily mail supporter was fuming at this crap article

sheepgomeep · 24/10/2011 22:17

yes naughty child syndrome grrrrrrrrrrrrr

WilsonFrickett · 24/10/2011 22:33

salad, yes you do have to pay with your DLA, but that bit doesn't really get printed in the papers.

Rocky the Motability man (and if he is the Chief Exec of Motability he earns a fortune by the way - why not concentrate your ire on him?) doesn't decide who gets the cars. He is in charge of the private company who supplies the cars to the Govt and who makes a vast profit in doing so.

Why on earth shouldn't someone with AIDS, who has met all the criteria for a serious, terminal illness, with the associated mobility problems not be entitled to a car? You are making a massive assumption about how that person may have contracted their illness which I find deeply offensive.

Rocky12 · 26/10/2011 19:08

The thing is - if everyone on this thread agreed with each other there wouldnt be much point having a discussion? I am genininely asking - do we give out cars to everyone that is dying of some horrible illness?

AVoidkaTheKillerZombies · 26/10/2011 20:05

Rocky - it has already been pointed out to you that this is not AIBU. If you want a fight then I suggest you go there.

Peachy · 26/10/2011 20:12

Ricky Sn isn;t a disucssion board: it;s a support baord

Esp wrt to idiots who don;t know how DLA works

DLA is NOT diagnosis absed, according to our Paed something like 60% of disabled children don;t ever get a formal title- quite often LD / GDD / etc is the more generalised descriptive term given

therefore DLA quite rightly goes by the actual needs of ther applicant: not why can't yopu walk but how far can you walk, do you need help etc. It's much firer that way

And of course people with cancer can apply

But Rocky who would you withdraw mobility from, and is that just car or entire support? Go on, i;d be interested to know and as am going on an MN break tomorrow need a laugh

cornycabana · 26/10/2011 22:45

Rocky - support is based on need and not diagnosis.

cornycabana · 26/10/2011 22:46

'if everyone on this thread agreed with each other there wouldnt be much point having a discussion'

this is not AIBU

WilsonFrickett · 26/10/2011 23:55

We don't actually 'give out cars' to anyone. People with disabilities and life-limiting illnesses are assessed for benefits. People who have sever mobility issues - ie people who cannot walk get a higher rate of benefit. They can choose to put this towards their transport in whatever way they wish, e.g. to fund taxis, to use towards a bigger family car. Some of these people chose to take that element of their benefit - which, again, they have been independently assessed by medical practitioners for - and use it to lease a car through a government run scheme called mobility. That's it.

No-one is giving out cars like sweeties. Oh, and many people who are 'dying of a horrible illness' die before their claims can be assessed btw, but you won't catch the Daily Fail printing a story on that...

Finally - this is not a discussion board, although I have tried to answer your posts constructively. This is a support board. I suggest you go and read a thread called 'Beatrice, because a life of love is a life worth living' and get yourself some perspective. That's the reality of many, many people's lives on this board.

unpa1dcar3r · 27/10/2011 06:27

Rocky
When someone or their child/ren qualify for a car, they lose the mobility component of the DLA to lease one normally over 3 years (although can be 5). This is £205 per month so over a 3 year period it will cost the recipient in the region of £7/ plus and then the car goes back with nothing for the recipient to show for it except the 3 yrs usage.
Now before you counter that with 'yes but that money comes from tax payers' which seems to be the general and misguided opinion of many responses on DM., Let me suggest the alternative from my own life;
I will decide i cannot cope with 2 SLD boys (both bigger than me BTW) and stick them in res care. Of course I will lose their DLA so that'll save the tax payer round about £12k per year...oh no hang on, the money will go towards their keep. Then we have the actual cost of keeping them in res care; wages alone at £7 ph for staff would cost the tax payer £500,000 PY, not to mention of course all their other needs.
I as their one and only carer get £2,400 PY in carers allowance.

I'm sure you can do the maths here. I am in effect 'saving' the TP's a helluva lot of money, but do we see these FACTS printed in the Nazi Mail? Do we hell!

Every little crumb we fight for tooth and nail, nothing is just handed out like this article and all the other disability bashing articles surmise...things are snatched away just like that, whether it's DLA being decreased or removed/social services support or whatever. Our lives are blighted not by our wonderful special children but by the idiots who are supposed to support us in our roles as carers and parents...
The DM is a Tory paper and it is merely picking on a vulnerable group to justify why the benefits are all being taken away from us by their revered leader. A leader who incidentally claimed DLA for his own son despite being a multi millionaire who employed 24/7 trained nurses to raise his son because he could afford to do that.
I suggest you go read a little of Stanley Cohen's Folk Devils and Moral Panics, omit mods and rockers for disabled....

So some of us get a much needed car. Big freaking deal. Whoopydedo.

If someone could take away my sons' Fragile X Syndrome I'd happily let 'em have my car!!!!

Peachy · 27/10/2011 08:55

I flagged this thread up to MN last night alongside my concerns about an AIBU attitude sneaking in to Sn.

no response yet.

I won't be ehre now for a week as that documentary about welfare is on tonight and ahs already announced that basically it support slashing disability support etc furtehr so I don't think I could dope with teh fallout and rather than being educational or moderating in my posts will start telling people to fuck off and leave my ds3's safety net alone.

So I bid you all adieu and you know, just watch out for that doc. See you in a week.

Peachy · 27/10/2011 08:56

We don;t even get teh car but ATOS tick boxes looka s if they will already stop my autistic, sppech affected limited attention sapn ds3 getting help- he can fulfil the taks immediately but not in five minutes time. nobody willl employ him but they don't want him to get help either.

Triggles · 27/10/2011 08:58

Peachy - what documentary is that??

magso · 27/10/2011 09:34

Frankly if a hyperactive child is disabled enough to get HR mob then they jolly well need it not bashing! We are fortunate to own a car but without it life would be very difficult. I really feel for families of dc like my son (who has LD ASD ADHD and is far too big to carry or drag but does not get Hrmob) who do not have a means of transport. Our car is much more than a car -it is our life line, a safe place, a refuge.

Triggles · 27/10/2011 10:04

Peachy, thanks for that... god, I dread to think of the fallout... I HATE it when these types of shows and news articles show up. Brings out all the sheep. Hmm baaaaaaa
