When to let them know where are doing ABA??

We are in the early stages of applying for a statement and are currently doing ABA. The LA crowd seem totally against ABA so we decided not to declare at this early stage but we do want ABA on our statement.

Am wondering if there are any ABAers out there who could let me know what stage did you declare you were doing ABA for your dc??

Am really not sure how to approach this... please help!

I declared it totally upfront, as we were being assessed for a statement, and gave firm proof that ABA was working (and that a year and half of TEACCH hadn't worked). I also made a sweet little reference to having taken legal advice. Then I was v v charming and polite. This worked well and I got ABA.
However, a pal of mine did it totally differently and felt it was better to secure the statement first, then fight the ABA battle. Think she may be right , and maybe I just lucked out.

Yes, I got it written into the statement that my DS needed part time ABA / part time mainstream with LSA, with a view to decreasing the ABA home component 'in line with progress'. In retrospect, I should have got the words "ABA-trained LSA' in as well, but maybe they would have refused. In the end, I got the ABA tutors in as LSAs just because I got a decent SENCO, and the LA didn't get involved at all.

Hi,

I have been told about the various stages:

Request
Actual process of getting support - LA gives yes/no to support
LA decide how much support on statement
Parents agree or appeal

We are in the 2nd stage so they have not agreed to statement yet. Do you think its still early days?? If so when would you declare. If I declared later, would they say no to ABA on the grounds I did not declare this from the start?

P.S. sorry about title ( meant to say we not where!!) - am needed every 2 mins my house for various iggle piggle emergencies so no time to check for dodgy typos!!

bump and watching with interest. we started ABA recently as well and the statement application is just being done and we haven't told anybody about ABA yet either...

The statement gave me a pot of money (15k)which was used partly to fund home tutors and part to fund the LSAs employed by the school (who happened to be aba tutors). I still had to top up the funds for home aba as it wasn't enough, but think they chose the figure of 15k cos it's roughly the cost ofa full time LSA .

Hi SOSCE,

Good to hear your LA are more amenable to ABA- are you in London at all? My provider told me that ABA is more difficult to get in London. Am bracing myself for a battle!!

Our LA is anti-ABA too. They knew we were doing it when we applied for a statement. We were open throughout that we knew thought it was the best for ds. I included information at the first stage of applying, and more info and detailed reports etc for our SA2 submission. Draft statement included no ABA. Our agree/disagree form again reiterated in detail why/how aba was most effective for ds. Statement finalised with no ABA. We have since submitted an appeal.

Tbh I think it doesn't matter when you tell them you want it. It won't make a difference to whether they assess him or not, and if they do go ahead with assessment and then a statement, the fact you are doing it and want it in your statement won't make any difference to whether or not they include it.

The key thing at this stage, regardless of ABA, is that you list in as much detail as possible all the difficulties ds has. That what they will base their decision on whether to give a statement or not. They won't care about what therapy/ies you are giving him atm. If I was you I probably wouldn't mention it now, but not becuase you're hiding anything - but because it won't make any difference.

We're in London too. Our borough is notoriously anti-ABA. Which borough are you?
