He's been called out on it by a few other comedians and writers (Richard Herring and Grace Dent most notably). He claims, in all seriousness, that they're jealous of his success. I like the stuff he writes, but as a person I'm not a fan.

Hopstheduck · 19/10/2011 08:31

I saw the show that was on tv recently and he elaborated on his use of it a bit. He did say that it was not intended at all as a reference to people with down's syndrome, and he doesn't mean any offence to anyone with down's syndrome. Still feel that if he really didn't want to cause offense he wouldn't use it though Sad

Pagwatch · 19/10/2011 08:32

Ricky Gervais is a cunt. Shocking.

Pagwatch · 19/10/2011 08:33

Of course I mean cunt as an affectionate term Ricky. Not in the way you might think.
When I call you a fucking twatty cunt I just mean you are quite funny. It's my modern slang

FrillyDrag · 19/10/2011 08:51

Ricky Gervais is the same age as me. Old enough to know for sure what Mong means. He has a piece of his heart missing like his mate Jonathan Ross

appropriatelytrained · 19/10/2011 10:04

Yeah, he's jumped on the Jimmy Carr/Frankie Boyle boat and headed out to twat sea!

We were watching the programme and I just turned over when he started joking about that.

There are enough legitimate, powerful, corrupt targets in our messed up world. Why do these people have to use terms which vilify the vulnerable and appeal to the lowest common denominator? It's beyond me.

hazeyjane · 19/10/2011 10:09

Richard Herring called him on it, and said it very succinctly here

"Ricky Gervais is new to Twitter and seems to have spent the first couple of weeks mainly posting pictures of himself pulling the kind of faces that school children pull to parody the disabled and calling people 'mongs'.

"I think many comics are guilty of using [the word "mong"] as convenient and humourless punchlines. I don't think any of them would do the same with the word 'n*er' or 'p**i' but they're happy to use 'mong' or 'retard' as a means of getting a laugh. And audiences will laugh at those words too and rarely even complain about them.

"If the words are upsetting some people and perpetuating a stereotype, isn't it more noble and thoughtful to just admit you might have made a mistake and stop?"

FrillyDrag · 19/10/2011 11:06

We love you Richard Herring

BabeRuthless · 19/10/2011 12:10

It doesn't seem to have clicked with him that kids copy that language and don't understand the alleged satire of what he's trying to do. That word jars with me so much. Now it's hit the papers I can see him going off twitter in the next week.

sickofsocalledexperts · 19/10/2011 12:23

I had a go at Ricky on Twitter about this last week - saying exactly what Frilly Drag was saying: if you are of a certain generation, you know exactly what connotations the word 'mong' has , particularly when combined with the hilarious 'mong' face, which is of course a parody of Downs syndrome. What I can't stand is his pompous Hampstead-intelligentsia defence of the word, ('tye word has moved on, I would never dream of using it to refer to DS'). I said to him - that's all very well in leafy Hampstead with your champagne-swilling chums, but in the playgrounds of our mainstream schools it is being used to bully our SEN kids. And 'adults' like Ricky thinking the word 'mong' and the funny face are hilarious, just legitimises the word. What a knob.

mollymole · 19/10/2011 12:46

he is an obnoxious twat

ouryve · 19/10/2011 13:18

The guy's a self inflated tosser.

Voidka · 19/10/2011 15:02

He is such an Arse.

Becaroooo · 19/10/2011 16:09

I loathe him - what an arsehole he is.

And love Richard Herring Smile

He reminds me of one of those lads at school who have no friends and hang around the cool kids on the periphery and say offensive/ridiculous/infantile stuff like this to get notice/approval.

Quite sad, really.

Oh, god and that awful high pitched giggle....ugh!!!

jandymaccomesback · 19/10/2011 16:55

Oh no. My son regularly refers to himself as a mong(he has Aspergers). I had no idea what it meant, and I doubt he did either. It seems to be quite a common term amongst teenagers at the moment.

lechildrenofthecornsilk · 19/10/2011 17:17

He is a twat. Fact.

ovenchips · 19/10/2011 17:18

His so-called defence doesn't stand up to scrutiny either. When he's pulling these 'hilarious' faces he is, without any doubt whatsoever, mimicking people with learning difficulties. So although he claims 'I would never dream of using [the word] to refer to Down's Syndrome', he obviously thinks it okay to use the word to refer to those with LDs in general. How is this any better to him?

I've always loathed him. His dead, dead eyes make me shudder.

spiritsam · 19/10/2011 17:38

He is a total idiot :(

coff33pot · 19/10/2011 18:58

He added: "The meaning of words change over time ? 'gay' for example. The modern use of the word 'mong' means dopey or ignorant ? it's in slang and urban dictionaries."

Oh so that makes it all right then...............what a horrible, disgusting, offensive man.....

WetAugust · 19/10/2011 19:39

He's always been an odious little git - never have liked him

HeadlessLamAAARRRGHHHH · 19/10/2011 19:39

Thought you'd like to see an article from the Grauniad website. The writer got called "cunt" and "mong" by followers of RG. The former doesn't bother her. I'm with her. I don't mind if someone thinks I'm a cunt and calls me one, but mong is just appallingly crass and idiotic. I'm not angry about what he's said, more disappointed that he wouldn't associate the word with Downs Syndrome.
My circle of friends growing up had a friend who has Downs. We spent most summer holidays and weekends together, all of us as a group. This boy did the same things we did, the football, the tree climbing, the yomping along streams etc, and as sometimes he was slower than us we used to wait for him. He's now got a fantastic group of friends and is one of the most self confident people I know. His parents were forward thinking, in my opinion, as there was far more prejudice in the late '70s.
Anyway, read t'article, it's very interesting. Smile

MangoMonster · 19/10/2011 19:46

He's a twat, I've seen him live and he made jokes about kids with cancer. I liked the office but his standup is vile at times. Unfortunately, some people seemto find this shit funny Confused

Davros · 19/10/2011 20:26

I live in Hampstead (thank you for the comments folks!) and I think he's a wander. If I get a chance I will key his car or even brick his windows.
