ADD/ ADHD - Predominantly Inattentive

I suspect that DS1 (7) has ADD/ ADHD - Predominantly Inattentive. He is hugely disorganised, distracted, fidgety, doesn't listen to or look at people speaking to him and struggles at school. Does anyone have any experience of this or advice? I have a standard parent-teacher meeting next week so will bring it up but no teacher has ever mentioned it to me, other than last year's teacher telling me he is very disorganised. We realised he was generally struggling academically in Year 1 so he goes to a place for extra maths and reading twice a week after school which has helped but he still struggles :(.

Hi GGM, the main sn children board gets lots more traffic than over here, you may want to consider reposting this over there I have no direct adhd experience myself but I have found as a parent you need to be the one asking for support and being the politest 'pushy parent' you can. Unfortunately school time and resources are limited so it's often a case of she who shouts loudest gets Have you seen the sen code of practice? Have you considered asking your gp for a referal to a developmental paed to get on the road to a dx?

if you suspect it, then your instinct is probably right. IME teachers don't understand the complexities of ADHD and will tell you he's fine 'typical boy' and will catch up. Even when we actually gave them the consultants report on our son stating he had ADHD they still said 'oh well we dont' really see that!'... We had this with our son since reception class.. the signs were there and I wish I'd pushed harder when he was younger. now in year 8 (he is 12) he is falling apart, going backwards and throwing up with anxiety. And we are faced with a lengthy, expensive and painful tribunal and having to get him a special placement. Get him assessed now (privately if you can and also with support from you GP) and demand that the school have him assessed for everything. Good luck
