Propanol and Amitryptiline

Any Mum out there used these for pain relief for DC's with chronic pain, can see the logic (ex paed nurse,very old!!) but would like first hand knowledge. I think I have made my mind up as I can no longer bear to see him in pain any more. I am a snivelling wreck.

SORRY MEANT PROPANOLOL

My DD has taken both and now taking just the amitryptiline and has been for 5 years. She has periferal nerve damage (her body doesnt shut off pain) caused by virus (glandular fever they reckon)

The amitryptiline apart from an anti D it also is used to help repair nerve endings. And also used as an aid for sleep which doesnt come when she is in pain.

I take metoprolol (very similar to propanalol) and amitryptiline for migraine. The only real 'symptom' I get is vivid and lasting hallucinations.

I have been on them for some months now, and I get a few weeks without any hallucinations, then I can get a string of days with them, always in the early hours.

That isn't to put you off, but it is worth exploring that with the paed. I don't know what the incidence of them are, though.

cof33pot you angel! DS aged 13 has been dx with pain of neurogenic origin, he is a post pneumococcal meningitis baby deafblind cp and epilepsy. Has always been prone to periods of severe pain everybody felt it was abdominal pain. He has a jejtube as he refuxed ++ with gtube. Pain seems to be related to medicines given down jtube and when sat in one position for a while. Commenced propanolol last night taking B/P x 2 a day. sorry to blather on but I find it quite cathartic. Is this similar to your DD and how long before it kicked in?

My dd takes proprananol for migraine. She's been a very different child since being on it. Took a while before she settled on a dose and we stopped seeing side effects but now there's no problems and her migraine are really very well controlled.

I take both for migraine and fibromyalgia - very low dose. Helps enormously.

i take propanolol for nervous twitches (bought on by mainstream school stress!), have to stay it is rather good. I dont take it as much now but if i have a meeting with CAMHS especially i always feel my head starting to shake a bit and my arms feels light and wobbly, i take a tab and within 20mins my arms are ok and my head is not wobbly! hope that helps, ive had no side effects and just take as and when required

Thank you kind people who replied. We are at the end of our tether, he has been in constant pain since June (no school). Your posts have made me think that they are going down the right line. Sadly we are often reduced to chloral hydrate at night so neihbours and family can have a night's sleep. Hopefully, going by your posts he will get some relief shortly.

Amytriptiline (sp?) can cause a really dry mouth...make sure your dc has water near them when they wake.
