OMG the smearing has changed into licking it

DH has just witnessed ds licking poo off his hands .

I'm at my wits end tonight. Things are not working with his new class teacher. I've had to request a meeting with the head but not been given a date. The sw is calling the school tomorrow to request an urgent meeting with the head. DS has had a massive meltdown again since coming home from school lasting well over an hour. All I can make out is brown windows and new drawers. I've spent 4 hours trying to calm him down and help dd do her homework (which ds has ripped and scribbled on which of course has made dd cry).

And now this. Its disgusting. The smearing is bad enough but to be licking it. I know its because he's not coping with things but this is going to make him ill.

Sorry you're having an awful evening. It might just be a one off hopefully and hope he doesnt get unwell. I've heard stories about other kids doing this, so hopefully it's just a phase.

Just thought I would say I have a ds who eats and licks it though not really smeared it. He has always seemed ok after it, not that I let it happen!!

devientenigma how do you stop it? Is it possible to stop it even?

Have called psycologist yesterday and today and left a message.

funnily enough rebl since I have had him out of nappies he doesn't do it as much, if at all. Before that I was just always on guard and diverted him, however there is always going to be the times you miss. So sorry I can't help.

rebl - how old is your DS?

Triggles he's 5. Just gone into yr1 in ms unsupported and he's clearly not coping. Just spoken to NDCS and they're going to try and get someone to come to the next CAF meeting and argue the case for a statuory assessment because I've got no where on that. Still can't get hold of CAMHS but left numerous messages this week for them to call me back.

DS2 went through this at around 3, almost 4. It sent me right around the bend. He would poo in his nappy at night and then take it off and smear it all over - he had some on his face and such, so honestly not sure if he was licking it or smearing it. (not sure I want to know! )

At that point, we had to put him in sleepers backwards at night (so the zip was in the back and he couldn't open it to get it off to get to the nappy). And obviously watch him closely during the day to make sure he didn't do that during the day. We had to do that for about 6 months - then we gritted our teeth and decided to try him without the sleepers backwards one night - and he didn't take off the nappy - he just stopped finally. He wakes quite a bit during the night, and very very early in the morning, so it wasn't something we could police at night, so the sleeper was the best option. I don't know if it would work for you? If he'd managed to get the sleeper off, our next choice was the sleeper inside out and backwards. We were desperate!

DS2 has just gone into yr1 in ms, although he has very good support at his school. I have noticed he is having more accidents during the day (wee) and holding poo a bit here and there. But he eats so much fibre in his diet, he'd never be able to hold it for long (IMO). I have actually been watching in case he started having issues with poo again, as he's so tired and unfocused by the end of the day. I'm emailing the continence nurse today, in fact, to discuss his bedwetting as he doesn't show any sign of being trained at night at all.

Thanks. He's not doing it at night, he's doing it during the day, when he goes to the toilet. He's chronically constipated and its really bothering him at the moment which I suspect that's why he's got his hands down there more. I wish I could get hold of someone on his team to help.

Hi really feel for you rebl, this has to be the most challenging behaviour ever. My ds is 10 and does it (has been for last couple years), given half a chance. He actually strips himself, takes of his nappy smears over full room, including windows, blinds and walls and eats it. covers himself head to toe and its even in his teeth so he is eating it. If its any consolation he never seems up nor down after he's cleaned up, though he too has chronic constipation, so often screams and goes rigid with sore tummy, so i cant really tell if its due to this or not. When im at home and he's in his room and out of sight i put on a special made sleepsuit which prevents him getting to his nappy (though obviously depends if your dc would be ok wearing suit). My ds has lots of problems and doesnt mind what i put on him, so thats my solution. Hope you get a solution or it stops soon because it would drive you insane.

oh rebl - sorry. Wish I could offer some helpful advice. Hope you find a solution soon. I remember the stress and freaking out because he'd literally painted the room with poo. Hopefully they can sort out the constipation and that will help.

The continence nurse suggested its because of the constipation being so bad that its hurting so much when he does a big poo he's trying to help it out. And then when he's got overflow he's getting his hand in the mess. She suggests that he's then panicking about the poo and just wiping it everywhere. I don't know what the hell it is. DS says its an accident, everytime.

I did manage to speak to the psycologist but she's not got any ideas right now. She's wondering if its sensory related but she's going to speak to some colleagues. She's given us some coping strategies until we see her next week. We're dealing with massive tantrums and this smearing since going back to school and we're at breaking point.
