monitoring progress in school - what would you want in an ideal world?

I have a meeting with ds2's reception class teacher, school senco and his 1-1 ta next monday and I am wondering what I should be asking for in term of monitoring ds's progress etc.

I have put SA on the back burner for now but want to make sure I can monitor and record his progress in case I have to start the process again.

I know lots of you have been through this and are a lot further down the road and was wondering if you would share your ideal senario as regards records, home-school communication etc.

Not expecting school to be perfect by any means but it would be nice to know what I should be asking for in an ideal world.

Are his problems academic? or social? or behavioural? or something else?

If you want to concentrate on academic progress:

Every lesson should have a learning objective (LO) which he should meet.

In an ideal world I'd like a list of the LOs DD had met every fortnight. If he has a 1:1 then this sounds like something she could create for you.

( Hmmmm, that will be quite a list. I think they normally have 3 LOs a day. 1 for maths, 1 for literacy, and 1 for the afternoon - so in a fortnight that would be 30 )

I guess I'd also like a list of the LOs DD didn't make that fortnight :)

Then if you ever weren't happy with his progress, you could concentrate on discussing with his teacher whether his LOs were suitable challenging or not....
Or concentrate on why she wasn't meeting her LOs

Hi thanks for the reply - I knew there wasn't gonna be an easy quick answer

Ds has Verbal Dyspraxia (we think) but is improving - possibly mildly motor dyspraxic as well but the jury is still out. No obvious concerns re asd and no apparant learning difficulty yet.

He has 1-1 to help with his communication and to allow him to access the class and his peers. No IEP in place yet but should have one to discuss next Mon. He does have behaviuoral issues in that he gets very frustrated with not being able to get his point of view across which can result in complete melt downs and him getting physical with other children. Academically we don't know yet so time will tell.

Sounds like for your DS progress is all about communicating?

So monitoring his progress is all about monitoring how and how often he communicates?

So get the TA to record, and show, you something about that.....

My youngest has a home to school book but this if for a quick one line, on Monday's I get a report with columns such as social, p.e. etc and is linked to IEP they write comments on how he has done the week before and a space for my comments.
