Starting statement process, HELP

Ok, nursery and me have agreed to apply for statement for dd2. Nursery seem to think it would be better if i apply for statement but im not sure. What do I need to do to start process?? What paper work do I need to support it?
Does LA care who applies or is it better for nursery to do it?
SALT told me today she wont get it on speech.

It is better for you to do it - you have more rights of appeal, i believe.

you need the IPSEA site. they ahve model letters - just use that template, and off you go. you are requesting a Stautory Assessment. I kept my letter brief, and it was an exact copy of the IPSEA one, tbh. no detail at all.

the LA then have 6 weeks to decide whether to go ahead and assess, or turn you down. when they decide to assess (let's be positive!), they send you a pack with timelines, and forms to fill in. nursery also get forms to fill in.

but IPSEA is your first port of call.

I let my son's nursery/attached school apply for me, as they knew the process better. It doesn't matter who the statement comes from though...

Paperwork you will need:

Paed letter/diagnosis
Report from Nursery(include IEPs)
Assessment from Ed.Psych.
Assessment from SALT, OT, any other professionals involved
Letter from you detailing issues your DD has, and help you feel she needs.

Once you apply for statement,the LA will send you relevant forms. Parent Partnership can help with the process.

There's probably loads more, which I have forgotten...Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along in a bit.

You apply, then the LEA ask your nursery for all the paperwork.

You are better off applying - then at least you know it's done.

You don't need to send any paperwork in with the initial request. You just need to request it.

Think I have most of paper work already. School have years worth of iEP, OT report is in as is physio, and salt.

Sorry Lisad, but don't believe a word of it. The exact same was said to me and yet we ended up with an hour 1:1 SALT per week.

The LA don't care who applies for it, but if you do it, it ensures that you are copied into every correspondence and piece of evidence which helps you negotiate if you need to and go through the tribunal process if that is needed.

I also laughed - bitterly - at the comment that SALT made. Silly moo. SALT provision in a statement btw needs to be in both parts 2 and 3 of that document.

Use IPSEA's model letter on their website www.ipsea.org.uk
The initial request needs to be short and concise; loads of info is not needed at that stage.

If you apply for it personally you know its been done then (nursery could sit on it for ages). Also if you apply you have the right of appeal if the LEA say no; nursery cannot appeal that particular decision.

You will need to write to the Chief Education Officer at your LEA and give them six weeks to reply (mark that date on your calendar).

DD2 nursery has spoken to their SEN officer, and she has now sent me a form to fill in and asking for report, now im confused

Its a p/sar form asking loads of stuff and asking for reports. SO have I skipped the request stuff??

Hi Lisa - why not try your local parent partnership, who will know how the system works locally - lots of LAs have different forms, all to achieve the same goal iyswim. Look on your local council website and you should find it - it is a free service.
